What does a remote photo editor do?

As a remote photo editor, your job is to work from home to edit a photograph for your client. Remote photo editors usually use Photoshop or another image editing program and take pictures directly from cameras or other resources to prepare them for print or digital use. This role is similar to a photo retoucher, but as an editor, you usually make more substantial changes to a given image. This can include applying special effects, using digital techniques to add or remove elements of the image, or modifying the image to make it easier to include logos or other company assets. Many remote photo editors work on a freelance basis, but some full-time jobs are available.

What does a remote photo editor do?

A Remote Photo Editor is a professional who edits and enhances digital photographs using image editing software while working from a remote location. They adjust elements such as color, brightness, contrast, and sharpness, and may remove unwanted objects or retouch images according to client specifications. Remote Photo Editors often collaborate with photographers, marketing teams, or media companies to ensure high-quality visual content. Their work is crucial in industries like e-commerce, publishing, advertising, and social media.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote photo editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Photo Editor, you need expertise in image editing, color correction, and retouching, typically backed by a portfolio demonstrating your skills. Proficiency in industry-standard software such as Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and familiarity with digital asset management systems is essential. Attention to detail, time management, and strong communication skills help remote editors meet client expectations and deadlines. These abilities ensure high-quality visual output and efficient collaboration in a remote work environment.

How does a remote photo editor typically collaborate with photographers and creative teams?

As a remote photo editor, collaboration with photographers and creative teams is often managed through digital communication tools like email, video calls, and project management platforms. Editors receive raw images and creative briefs, provide feedback, and deliver edits based on the project requirements. Clear communication and timely updates are essential to ensure alignment on artistic vision and deadlines. Building strong remote relationships helps maintain workflow efficiency and ensures high-quality results, even when team members are in different locations.

Job description

About Dance Media

All Dance. All The Time.

Dance Media is the #1 platform for the dance industry, delivering engaging content across digital, social, print, and event platforms to an audience of 16 million. With six multichannel brands, including Dance Magazine, Dance Spirit, Pointe, Dance Teacher, Dance Retailer News and The Dance Edit, our audience spans dance enthusiasts of all types. From students to professionals, teachers, choreographers, artistic directors, and studio owners, we serve the entire ecosystem of dance.

Recently acquired by the same entrepreneurs who transformed Backstage from a legacy print publication into a profitable digital marketplace, Dance Media is embarking on an exciting new chapter. We’re investing in every aspect of the business: modernizing our technology, improving the infrastructure, and building a flat culture where good ideas win, initiative is rewarded, and talented people can make a real impact.

The Opportunity:

Dance Media is seeking a Managing Editor to support the editorial operations and content production for Pointe, Dance Teacher, and Dance Spirit. You’ll be joining a talented editorial team that includes a Content Director/Editor in Chief, three Editors in Chief, a Senior Managing Editor, and a Social Media Producer. We’re a group of analytical, curious, and collaborative professionals with a steady pulse on the dance world and deep passion for the industry, and we take pride in delivering excellent content that connects with our audience.

As a Managing Editor, you will play a central role in keeping the editorial process organized, on schedule, and aligned with each brand’s quality standards. You’ll also oversee the end-to-end production of several regular columns, which will provide the opportunity to interview leading dance talent, spotlight emerging companies and choreographers, and attend performances and photo shoots. In this role, you’ll work closely with the Editors in Chief and the Senior Managing Editor to achieve shared editorial goals, helping to move stories from assignment through publication.

The Managing Editor will report to the Senior Managing Editor.

This is a full-time, exempt role with a salary range of $45,000–$50,000. While we are open to qualified remote candidates, we prefer candidates within the NYC metro area who are able to conduct reporting in-person and attend photo/video shoots.

How You’ll Make an Impact:

  • Manage the digital workflow across Pointe, Dance Teacher, and Dance Spirit; you’ll track the status of each story, ushering content through fact-checking, copyediting, and publishing to ensure deadlines and quality standards are met

  • Direct Pointe’s digital membership program, Pointe+, managing meetings, newsletter execution, and other program-related tasks

  • Own the production of several regular columns, including idea generation, pitch review, assigning, editing, scheduling photo and video shoots, and uploading content online

  • Manage editorial budgets, including contributor invoices

  • Prepare the newsletter for Pointe, leveraging existing editorial content and images to support audience engagement

  • Oversee the planning grid for monthly editorial content in partnership with Editors in Chief

  • Coordinate and participate in regular editorial team meetings, helping team to stay aligned on priorities, deadlines, and upcoming content

Who You Are:

  • Bachelor’s degree in dance, journalism, English, or a related field

  • 2+ years editorial experience in digital media, including assigning, editing, and reporting

  • You have a deep understanding of the pre-professional and professional dance industry, including knowledge of dance genres, artists, companies, trends, techniques, and issues, with a specialized interest in ballet

  • You are exceptionally attentive to detail and have an excellent command of grammar, style, and editorial standards

  • You’re proficient with WordPress, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, and G Suite

  • You’re a highly capable project manager, balancing multiple projects, stakeholders, and tight deadlines effectively

  • You’re a clear and confident communicator who can both lead and collaborate effectively within a larger editorial team

  • Proactive and resourceful, you’re able to identify solutions to problems and keep projects moving without constant direction

Why Dance Media:

  • Work with pragmatic and collaborative executives from Backstage.com, BCG, Cast & Crew, etc. who value innovation and initiative.

  • Access to cutting-edge tools and platforms across every department.

  • Thrive in a flat structure where your voice is heard and respected.

  • Be part of revitalizing an iconic brand with a storied history.

  • Grow in any direction you choose—operations, product, development, or marketing. Dream big!

  • Maintain a fair work-life balance. We cherish time with our families (fur babies included!) and encourage you to do the same.
