Job description

GD Resources LLC is seeking experienced Medical Records Technicians (Inpatient/Outpatient Medical Coders) to support the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) and its Community-Based Outpatient Clinics under a Department of Veterans Affairs contract.

This is a 100% remote position requiring certified medical coders with extensive experience reviewing, validating, and assigning accurate medical codes for inpatient and outpatient records while ensuring compliance with VA, CMS, AMA, AHIMA, HIPAA, and Joint Commission standards.

The selected professionals will support one of the nation's busiest federal healthcare systems serving more than 75,000 Veterans and approximately 215,000 inpatient admissions and outpatient visits annually.

Position Responsibilities

The Medical Records Technician (Coder) will:

  • Perform inpatient and outpatient medical coding services.
  • Review complete medical records for coding accuracy and completeness.
  • Assign ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, HCPCS, and Evaluation & Management (E/M) codes.
  • Validate provider documentation for coding compliance.
  • Submit provider documentation clarification queries through encrypted Outlook email utilizing VA Provider Query standards.
  • Identify missing, conflicting, or ambiguous documentation.
  • Ensure coding complies with:
    • VA Coding Guidelines
    • CMS Regulations
    • AMA CPT Standards
    • AHIMA Coding Guidelines
    • Joint Commission Requirements
    • HIPAA Regulations
  • Review diagnoses, procedures, complications, and co-morbidities.
  • Ensure appropriate sequencing of diagnoses and procedures.
  • Maintain coding accuracy of 95% or greater.
  • Perform concurrent coding when assigned.
  • Participate in coding backlog reduction initiatives.
  • Interface with VA medical claims personnel regarding documentation and reimbursement.
  • Prepare reports and performance summaries for the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR).
  • Maintain complete credential documentation and competency records.
  • Participate in Government-directed meetings and briefings.
  • Remain current with changes to ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, CMS, and VA coding requirements.
  • Maintain complete documentation in accordance with VA documentation standards.
Required Qualifications

Candidates must possess one or more of the following certifications:

AHIMA
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
  • Certified Coding Specialist – Physician Based (CCS-P)

OR

AAPC
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
Experience Requirements

Candidates must have:

  • Minimum three (3) years of continuous medical coding experience
  • Experience in hospitals or healthcare systems comparable in size and complexity to the VA
  • Experience coding both inpatient and outpatient encounters
  • Strong knowledge of reimbursement methodologies
  • Experience reviewing physician documentation for coding accuracy
  • Experience communicating documentation clarification requests
  • Experience supporting coding compliance initiatives

Selected candidates must:

  • Successfully complete a Local File Check (LFC)
  • Obtain a favorable National Agency Check (NAC)
  • Qualify for a VA Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Card
  • Meet all VA Information Security requirements
  • Comply with HIPAA and Privacy Act requirements
Performance Standards

Contractor personnel shall:

  • Maintain 95% or greater coding accuracy
  • Meet VA productivity standards
  • Submit provider queries within established timelines
  • Close documentation queries within 30 days
  • Produce accurate and timely coding reports
  • Follow all VA documentation standards
  • Maintain current professional certifications throughout contract performance
Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates with:

  • Previous Department of Veterans Affairs coding experience
