REMOTE - Patent Prosecution Attorney

Remote - Patent Attorney
Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Patent Attorney to join our intellectual property practice. The successful candidate will advise clients across mechanical, electrical, and physics-based technologies, prepare and prosecute patent applications, and develop IP strategies to protect innovations. This role requires strong technical understanding, excellent drafting and prosecution skills, and the ability to work directly with inventors and cross-functional teams to build and manage patent portfolios.
Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, draft, and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications, including drafting specifications and claims tailored to client objectives.
  • Respond to office actions and examiner objections; manage prosecution strategy to maximize claim scope and allowance prospects.
  • Work closely with inventors and engineering teams (mechanical, electrical, and physics-based disciplines) to evaluate inventions and translate technical concepts into clear patent applications.
  • Conduct prior art searches, freedom-to-operate analyses, and patentability assessments to inform filing and enforcement decisions.
  • Advise clients on IP strategy, patentability, portfolio development, licensing opportunities, and potential infringement risks.
  • Support litigation and dispute resolution by preparing expert reports, claim charts, and technical analyses when needed.
  • Coordinate with foreign counsel for international filings (PCT, EPO, and national phase entries) and manage prosecution timelines and budgets.
  • Supervise and mentor junior associates, patent agents, and support staff; review work product for quality and consistency.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of patent law, USPTO rules, and developments in relevant technology areas to provide proactive client advice.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree and active admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) as a Patent Attorney/Agent.
  • Undergraduate or advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related technical field.
  • 3+ years of experience in patent prosecution, including drafting applications and responding to office actions; experience across mechanical and electrical technologies preferred.
  • Proven experience with patentability assessments, prior art searching, and freedom-to-operate analyses.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to attorneys, clients, and examiners.
  • Excellent analytical, project management, and client-counseling skills; ability to manage multiple matters and deadlines.
  • Experience collaborating with foreign counsel on international filings (PCT/EPO) and familiarity with global patent prosecution practices is a plus.
  • Experience supporting litigation, claim construction, or licensing matters is preferred.
