What is a Remote OSI PI Historian?

A Remote OSI PI Historian is a data management software system that collects, stores, and analyzes real-time and historical process data from remote or distributed locations. It is commonly used in industries such as energy, manufacturing, and utilities to monitor operations and improve decision-making. The 'remote' aspect means it can gather data from multiple sites or assets that are not physically connected to a central location. This allows organizations to centralize their data analysis and reporting, increasing operational efficiency and reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote OSI PI Historian?

To excel as a Remote OSI PI Historian, you need a solid background in industrial automation, data management, and knowledge of the PI System, often supported by a degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with OSIsoft PI tools, data integration platforms, and scripting languages like Python or PowerShell, as well as relevant certifications such as OSIsoft PI System Infrastructure Specialist, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving, communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for effectively managing data systems remotely and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure accurate data collection, system reliability, and seamless support of industrial operations from remote locations.

How does a Remote OSI PI Historian typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure data accuracy and system reliability?

As a Remote OSI PI Historian, you’ll work closely with engineering, IT, and operations teams to gather requirements, troubleshoot data issues, and implement improvements. Effective communication is key since you’ll often coordinate via virtual meetings and shared documentation. You’ll frequently validate data streams, support integration efforts, and recommend best practices for data integrity. This collaborative environment allows you to develop a deep understanding of plant processes and data infrastructure, which can open pathways to roles in data engineering or automation.
