Remote Optum medical coding involves reviewing clinical documents and assigning standardized codes for diagnoses, procedures, and services, all while working from a location outside a traditional office or hospital setting. Coders use their knowledge of medical terminology and coding systems like ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS to ensure accurate billing and compliance with regulations. Working remotely for Optum, a healthcare services company, typically requires strong attention to detail, proficiency with coding software, and adherence to privacy standards. This role supports healthcare providers in processing claims and receiving proper reimbursement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Optum medical coder?

To thrive as a Remote Optum Medical Coder, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, ICD-10 and CPT coding systems, and a relevant certification such as CPC or CCS. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, coding software, and HIPAA compliance tools is typically required. Keen attention to detail, time management, and strong written communication are essential soft skills for accuracy and collaboration in a remote environment. These competencies ensure precise coding, regulatory compliance, and efficient reimbursement processes, which are critical for healthcare operations.

Job description

Role Overview:
In this project, you will leverage your expertise in nephrology to help fine-tune large language models (like ChatGPT). Your deep understanding of renal diagnostics, dialysis management, and electrolyte disorders will help ensure AI systems deliver accurate, empathetic, and safe medical reasoning.

What You’ll Do:
  • Design and solve advanced clinical scenarios reflecting nephrology practice, from acute kidney injury and CKD management to complex electrolyte and acid-base disturbances.
  • Evaluate AI-generated responses for diagnostic accuracy, clinical judgment, and evidence-based reasoning in renal medicine.
  • Identify gaps in AI understanding across nephrology subspecialties including glomerular diseases, transplant nephrology, and dialysis modalities.
  • Collaborate with AI researchers and medical peers to improve model quality and reliability.
  • Provide structured, expert feedback that informs next-generation AI development for clinical and educational applications.

Candidate Requirements:
  • MD or equivalent; active practice within the last 3+ years.
  • Board certification or equivalent qualification in Nephrology.
  • Strong grasp of renal medicine — chronic kidney disease, dialysis, transplant nephrology, glomerular diseases, and fluid/electrolyte management.
  • Skilled in articulating complex medical reasoning in clear, patient-friendly language.
  • Excellent written and spoken English; familiarity with digital medical tools is a plus.
  • Education from a top-tier institution (e.g., Harvard, Stanford, UCSF, Oxford, etc.).

Offer Details:
  • Commitment: 20–40 hours/week (minimum 4 hours/day, with overlap in PST).
  • Engagement: Contractor/freelancer (no medical or paid leave).
  • Duration: 1 month, with possible extension.
  • Remote: Fully remote, collaborative environment.
