What is a remote operating system developer?

A Remote Operating System Developer is a software engineer who specializes in designing, building, and maintaining operating systems while working from a remote location. Their responsibilities include developing system-level software, troubleshooting kernel or driver issues, and ensuring the stability and security of the operating system. They often collaborate with distributed teams using online tools, and their work is critical for ensuring that computer systems run efficiently and securely across various hardware platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote operating system developer?

To thrive as a Remote Operating System Developer, you need strong proficiency in systems programming languages (such as C, C++, or Rust), a deep understanding of computer architecture, and experience with OS concepts, often supported by a computer science degree. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, debugging tools, and CI/CD pipelines is typically required, and certifications in Linux or other OS platforms can be advantageous. Excellent problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective remote communication are critical soft skills in this role. These competencies enable developers to build robust operating systems, collaborate efficiently in distributed teams, and ensure reliable software performance across diverse environments.

How do remote operating system developers typically collaborate with team members across different time zones?

Remote Operating System Developers often work with globally distributed teams, which requires strong communication and coordination skills. Collaboration is facilitated through asynchronous tools like version control systems, issue trackers, and chat platforms, as well as scheduled video meetings to discuss major design decisions. Job description

Build the developer infrastructure that powers one of the most sophisticated trading platforms in the world. You will own the build systems, CI/CD pipelines, and internal tooling that hundreds of engineers rely on every day to ship large-scale C++ and Python applications. If you like solving hard systems problems where performance and reliability actually matter, this one is worth a look.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Our client is a leading quantitative trading firm with a 25+ year track record of innovation. They have built their business on a high-performance platform and independent trading teams, backed by some of the best systematic trading and engineering talent in the industry. Engineers here work on low-latency programming, FPGA technology, hardware acceleration, and machine learning, supported by ongoing investment in top talent and technology.

WHY YOU WILL LOVE THIS ROLE

  • Work for a stable, established firm where smart, driven people thrive without the egos.
  • Leverage your expertise in build systems, CI/CD, and infrastructure automation in ways that directly shape engineering velocity across the firm.
  • Do meaningful work with real impact on developers, traders, and quants every single day.
  • Collaborate with bright, motivated colleagues in an open-concept workplace that values both performance and enjoyment.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Design, build, and enhance tools that support developer productivity, systems infrastructure, and DevOps practices.
  • Maintain and improve build and release infrastructure for large-scale C++ and Python applications, including build tooling, dependency management, CI/CD integration, and artifact workflows.
  • Design, develop, and operate scalable CI/CD pipelines for build, test, artifact promotion, deployment, and release workflows.
  • Build infrastructure automation and configuration management solutions across platform, CI/CD, and developer infrastructure services.
  • Develop internal developer tooling and self-service capabilities that reduce operational toil.
  • Use containerization and orchestration technologies to support reproducible builds and consistent deployment workflows.
  • Improve observability through centralized logging, metrics, tracing, dashboards, and alerting.
  • Implement software supply chain security practices, including artifact provenance, vulnerability scanning, secret management, and CI/CD security controls.
  • Partner with software engineers, infrastructure engineers, quants, traders, and SRE teams, and align regional solutions with global standards.
  • Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 7+ years of hands-on engineering experience building, operating, or improving software delivery, platform, infrastructure, CI/CD, DevOps, SRE, or developer productivity systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong Linux systems knowledge and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong understanding of software build systems for large C++ codebases, with experience in CMake, Ninja, Bazel, Buck2, or similar.
  • Experience with Python packaging and environment management using pip, conda, uv, pixi, or similar.
  • Experience building and operating CI/CD platforms, including pipeline design, build/test automation, artifact promotion, secrets handling, and failure diagnosis.
  • Experience with artifact repositories and lifecycle management using Artifactory, Nexus, Harbor, or similar.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation tools such as Terraform or Ansible.
  • Experience with Docker or Podman, and familiarity with Kubernetes, Nomad, ECS, or similar.
  • Experience with cloud, hybrid, or on-premises infrastructure. AWS, GCP, Azure, or private infrastructure preferred.
  • Proficiency in Python and shell scripting, plus Git and collaborative development workflows.
  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals, including DNS, load balancing, TLS, HTTP, routing, and service discovery.
  • Practical understanding of distributed systems reliability concepts.
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort working cross-functionally in a globally distributed environment.

BONUS POINTS IF YOU HAVE

  • Experience troubleshooting C++ build, linkage, dependency, ABI, compiler, and toolchain issues in large codebases.
  • Experience modernizing legacy build systems, improving build reproducibility, reducing build times, or introducing remote caching and remote execution.
  • Experience designing reproducible Python environments and internal package distribution workflows.
  • Familiarity with observability platforms such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, or OpenSearch.
  • Experience with workflow orchestration such as Airflow, or GitOps deployment methodologies.
  • Experience building internal developer portals or paved-road developer platforms.
  • Systems programming experience in C++ and/or Rust.
  • Experience integrating AI-assisted development tools into engineering workflows.

COMPENSATION AND PERKS

  • Generous paid time off policies.
  • Savings plans and financial wellness tools.
  • Hybrid working opportunities.
  • Free breakfast, lunch, and snacks daily.
  • In-office wellness experiences and reimbursement for select wellness expenses such as gym and personal training.
  • Company-sponsored sports teams, fitness events, volunteer opportunities, and charitable giving.
  • Social events, workshops, and continuous learning opportunities throughout the year.
