Remote Openshift Engineers are IT professionals who specialize in designing, deploying, and managing Red Hat OpenShift environments while working from a remote location. They are responsible for maintaining containerization platforms, automating workflows, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring high availability and security of applications running on OpenShift. These engineers often collaborate with development and operations teams to support DevOps practices and enable scalable, cloud-native solutions.

How does a remote OpenShift engineer collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure smooth deployment and maintenance of containerized applications?

Remote Openshift Engineers frequently work alongside developers, DevOps specialists, and IT operations teams to streamline the deployment and management of containerized applications. Collaboration is often facilitated through regular virtual meetings, shared documentation, and project management tools to coordinate tasks and troubleshoot issues. Being proactive in communication is key, as Openshift Engineers must ensure that infrastructure changes align with development needs and security requirements. They also contribute to knowledge sharing by documenting best practices and providing training or support to team members.

Job description

Platform Engineer - Enterprise Infrastructure

Apply now Job no: 505152
Work type: Full Time Regular
Location: Remote
Categories: Information Technology

Mutual of Omaha is seeking Platform Engineers who are passionate about modernizing enterprise infrastructure, solving complex technical challenges, and helping shape the future of the platforms that power our business.

This role is part of an evolving platform engineering model that brings together compute, operating systems, virtualization, storage, resiliency, automation, and modern platform technologies.

The organization is actively modernizing enterprise infrastructure through initiatives spanning platform engineering, automation, storage modernization, resiliency, and OpenShift Virtualization. Engineers in this role will help design, build, and support the infrastructure services and platform capabilities required to meet current and future business needs.

This position offers the opportunity to help shape the future direction of enterprise infrastructure through modernization, automation, and platform engineering initiatives.

We welcome engineers who bring meaningful depth in one or more infrastructure disciplines and the ability to learn, adapt, and grow across a diverse set of technologies. Candidates are not expected to have expertise in every technology within the portfolio.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU:

  • Estimated Salary (Levels have variable responsibilities and qualifications)
      • Engineer II: $130,000-$140,000 plus annual bonus opportunity
  • 401(k) plan with a 2% company contribution and 6% company match.
  • Work-life balance with vacation, personal time and paid holidays. See our benefits and perks page for details.
  • Applicants for this position must not now, nor at any point in the future, require sponsorship for employment.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Help design, engineer, and modernize enterprise infrastructure platforms and services supporting critical business applications.
  • Contribute to infrastructure modernization initiatives, including OpenShift Virtualization adoption, platform transformation, migration efforts, and technology strategy.
  • Partner with application, architecture, security, and platform teams to deliver reliable, scalable, and secure infrastructure services.
  • Build reusable automation and self-service capabilities using technologies such as Ansible, PowerShell, Python, APIs, Infrastructure as Code, and Git-based engineering practices.
  • Support and enhance enterprise compute, operating systems, virtualization, storage, backup, recovery, resiliency, and related infrastructure services.
  • Explore and responsibly adopt emerging technologies, including AI-assisted engineering tools, to improve automation, operational efficiency, troubleshooting, and service delivery while collaborating across technical disciplines.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

Candidates are not expected to have experience in every area below. We are interested in engineers with strong depth in one or more domains and the ability to learn and contribute across others.

Platform Modernization

  • Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization
  • Kubernetes and container platform concepts
  • GitOps, automated testing, and CI/CD practices

Linux, Windows & Compute

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux or other enterprise Linux distributions
  • Windows Server, Active Directory, PKI, and related infrastructure services
  • VMware vSphere
  • Cisco UCS or comparable enterprise compute platforms
  • Operating system and virtualization lifecycle management

Storage, Data Services & Platform Integration

  • Enterprise storage and data services supporting business-critical workloads, including platforms such as NetApp, Hitachi VSP, IBM DS8000, and other enterprise storage technologies.
  • Storage availability, replication, performance, capacity management, data protection, and storage networking technologies including Fibre Channel SAN and related connectivity services.
  • Storage integration with Linux, Windows, VMware, OpenShift, resiliency, and modern platform services.

Resiliency, Automation & Operations

  • Cohesity or comparable backup and recovery platforms
  • Disaster recovery, business continuity, and cyber-resiliency
  • Infrastructure automation and Infrastructure as Code
  • Monitoring, observability, and operational analytics
  • Able to work remotely with access to a high-speed internet connection and located in the United States or Puerto Rico.

PREFERRED:

  • Strong technical depth combined with curiosity and continuous learning
  • Systems thinking and understanding of dependencies across infrastructure layers
  • Automation and engineering solutions over manual processes
  • Collaboration and knowledge sharing over technology silos
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Responsible adoption of emerging technologies, including AI-assisted engineering

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role is not defined by ownership of a single technology or by already knowing every platform in the environment.

Successful engineers will apply their existing technical strengths while expanding into multi-disciplinary platform engineers capable of delivering secure, reliable, automated, and modern infrastructure services.

Examples of potential growth paths include:

  • A storage engineer expanding into Linux, OpenShift Virtualization, automation, and platform engineering.
  • A Linux, Windows, or virtualization engineer expanding into storage, resiliency, data services, and platform engineering.
  • An infrastructure engineer developing expertise in automation, Infrastructure as Code, GitOps, and modern platform engineering practices.

The goal is not for every engineer to know every technology. The goal is to build a team with strong individual areas of expertise, increasing overlap across disciplines, and the adaptability to support the technologies the enterprise will need in the future.

This role is classified as remote; however, periodic in-person attendance will be required at times for activities such as quarterly or project planning, training, or other business-critical meetings.

We value diverse experience, skills, and passion for innovation. If your experience aligns with the listed requirements, please apply!
