What is a remote online GIS instructor?

A Remote Online GIS Instructor is a professional who teaches Geographic Information Systems (GIS) concepts and software through online platforms, rather than in a traditional classroom setting. These instructors design and deliver virtual lessons, provide support to students via email or video conferencing, and assess students' understanding of GIS topics. They often use specialized GIS software and tools to demonstrate mapping, spatial analysis, and data visualization techniques. This role requires strong technical knowledge of GIS, effective communication skills, and the ability to adapt teaching methods for remote learning environments.

How does a remote online GIS instructor typically collaborate with students and colleagues in a virtual environment?

As a Remote Online GIS Instructor, collaboration is primarily facilitated through digital platforms such as video conferencing, discussion boards, and shared project spaces. You will regularly interact with students during live lectures, virtual office hours, and group projects, providing guidance and feedback on their progress. Teamwork with other instructors or instructional designers is also common, often involving curriculum development and sharing best practices for effective online teaching. Strong communication skills and proficiency with e-learning tools are essential to foster an engaging and supportive virtual classroom.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote online GIS instructor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Online GIS Instructor, you need expertise in Geographic Information Systems, a relevant degree (such as geography or geospatial sciences), and prior teaching or training experience. Familiarity with GIS software like ArcGIS or QGIS, online teaching platforms, and certifications such as GISP are typically required. Strong communication, adaptability, and the ability to engage and motivate remote learners are essential soft skills. These capabilities ensure effective instruction, student engagement, and successful learning outcomes in a virtual environment.

  • Build the version-controlled spatial publication workflow that lets any prior rulemaking year's geography be reproduced exactly, the property litigation defense requires

  • Support the redesign of a national species-opportunity dataset aligned with 50 states' classification systems, including its GIS dimensions
  • Carry your work through peak season: January-May is annual rulemaking season, when spatial layer reliability is mission-critical, and you'll be the name behind it
  • Work inside our DoneRight Agile practice: two-week sprints, demos to the Government every sprint boundary, Definitions of Done that include accessibility and security

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of relevant experience (or equivalent combination)
  • Hands-on Esri/ArcGIS ecosystem experience: ArcGIS Enterprise and/or ArcGIS Online, feature service creation and administration, geodatabase management
  • Software development skills beyond desktop GIS: scripting/automation (Python and ArcPy preferred), REST API integration, and comfort working in Git and CI/CD workflows
  • Spatial data quality discipline: topology validation, boundary reconciliation, metadata, and provenance tracking
  • US citizenship or work authorization consistent with federal background investigation requirements; ability to obtain and maintain a federal background investigation at the level designated by the Government

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with federal or state government geospatial data (regulatory boundaries, cadastral/realty-derived data, or protected-lands datasets)
  • Familiarity with publishing to public open-data portals (ArcGIS Hub/Open Data)
  • Experience versioning spatial data for regulatory or audit purposes
  • Exposure to Azure cloud environments and modern web mapping libraries
  • Section 508/accessibility awareness for map-based interfaces
