What is remote online closed captioning?

Remote online closed captioning is the process of converting spoken dialogue and audio cues from live or pre-recorded video content into text, which is then displayed on screen. Captioners work remotely using specialized software to ensure that captions are accurate and synchronized with the audio. This service is essential for making content accessible to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, and is commonly used for webinars, live streams, television broadcasts, and educational videos.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote online closed captioner?

To thrive as a Remote Online Closed Captioner, you need excellent listening skills, strong command of grammar and spelling, and fast, accurate typing—often supported by a relevant certification or experience in transcription. Familiarity with captioning software such as CaptionMaker, ENCO, or similar, as well as basic audio and video editing tools, is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and strong communication skills help captioners deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines. These skills are essential for producing accurate, timely captions that enhance accessibility and meet legal or broadcast standards.

What are some common challenges faced by remote online closed captioners, and how can they be managed?

Remote online closed captioners often face challenges such as maintaining high accuracy under tight deadlines, managing distractions in a home environment, and keeping up with fast-paced dialogue or technical terminology. To address these, it's important to create a dedicated, quiet workspace, use high-quality audio equipment, and continually improve typing speed and familiarity with specialized vocabulary. Effective time management and regular communication with team members or supervisors can also help ensure captions meet standards and deadlines.

Job description

Italian Audio Transcriptionist (AI Training)
About the Role
What if your ability to catch every word, pause, and nuance in spoken Italian could directly shape how AI understands one of the world's most beautiful languages? We're looking for detail-oriented Italian transcriptionists - including Toronto's large and culturally rich Italian-speaking community - to produce accurate, high-quality transcriptions of spoken audio, helping train the next generation of AI speech and language systems.
This is real, meaningful work that requires genuine listening skill. You'll encounter natural conversation with all its messiness - crosstalk, background noise, filled pauses, multiple speakers, and rapid-fire dialogue. If you can hear through the chaos and put it on the page with precision, this role is for you.
This is a fully remote, flexible contract role. No AI background needed - just native-level Italian, excellent listening skills, and the discipline to follow detailed style and formatting guidelines.
  • Organization

  • Type
    : Hourly Contract
  • Location
    : Remote
  • Commitment
    : 10-40 hours/week

What You'll Do
  • Listen to audio recordings in Italian - including conversations, interviews, meetings, and other real-world speech - and produce precise, verbatim transcriptions
  • Accurately capture crosstalk, overlapping speakers, filled pauses (e.g., "ehm", "cioè"), false starts, and other natural speech phenomena
  • Identify and distinguish between multiple speakers throughout recordings
  • Handle challenging audio conditions including background noise, low-quality recordings, and varying accents or dialects
  • Follow detailed transcription style guides and formatting conventions with strict consistency
  • Apply timestamps, speaker labels, and annotation tags as required by project guidelines
  • Flag unclear or inaudible segments following established protocols
  • Complete task-based assignments independently on your own schedule

Who You Are
  • Native or near-native fluency in Italian - you understand spoken Italian across registers, speeds, and regional variations
  • Exceptional listening skills with a genuine ear for nuance and detail
  • Comfortable transcribing messy, real-world audio - not just clean studio recordings
  • Highly detail-oriented with a consistent, methodical approach to your work
  • Able to follow complex style and formatting guidelines precisely and apply them reliably across large volumes of work
  • Strong written Italian skills with excellent spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Self-motivated and reliable when working independently
  • Comfortable using web-based tools and platforms

Nice to Have
  • Prior experience as a transcriptionist, court reporter, or stenographer
  • Background in subtitle creation, closed-captioning, or post-production editing
  • Experience with linguistics, phonetics, or language documentation
  • Familiarity with annotation or data labeling platforms
  • Knowledge of Italian regional dialects and informal registers
  • Background in translation, localization, or language services
  • Experience working with detailed style guides in any professional context

Why Join Us
  • Work on cutting-edge AI projects alongside leading research labs
  • Fully remote and flexible - work when and where it suits you across the Greater Toronto Area and beyond
  • Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, task-based work
  • Contribute to AI development that directly shapes how technology understands spoken Italian
  • Put specialized listening and language skills to work on projects that genuinely matter
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
