  • Analyze field and other data, review construction documents and building codes, and develop recommendations and estimates.

  • Coordinate and produce high-quality client deliverables including structural designs, written reports, specifications, and construction documents.

Job description

HIE is seeking a high-level, motivated Structural Engineer to join our team in either a Project Engineer or Project Management position. This role is designed for an experienced professional who blends technical expertise with strategic project leadership across a varied practice. You will serve as a trusted technical resource for clients spanning structural design, structural assessments, and expert witness engagements.

  • For Denver Based Candidates: You won't just be behind a desk. You'll be in the field, engaging with clients, documenting real conditions, and delivering common-sense engineering solutions for the built world.
  • For Remote Candidates: You will be primarily design focused, with supplemental assistance on consulting, leveraging data, modeling, photographs, and field notes provided by our team to drive critical analysis, design, and reporting from your remote office.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Structural Design (All Candidates): Develop comprehensive, code-compliant structural designs, load paths, and framing layouts primarily focused on wood-framed structures (residential and commercial), as well as adaptive retrofits for existing buildings.
  • Structural & Building Consulting (Denver Candidates): Perform hands-on structural consulting for residential and commercial properties, including documenting distress, directing intrusive testing, and evaluating building envelope systems.
  • Expert Witness & Forensic Consulting (All Candidates): Support litigation and dispute resolution as a technical expert; prepare defensible reports, opinions of cause, and testimony-ready documentation for forensic and expert witness engagements.
  • Analysis & Reporting (All Candidates): Analyze field and other data, review construction documents and governing building codes, and develop recommendations and estimates.
  • Deliverable Preparation (All Candidates): Coordinate and produce high-quality client deliverables including structural designs, written reports, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Client Relations & Mentorship (All Candidates): Serve as a primary client contact, translating complex technical information into clear, actionable deliverables. Guide junior engineering staff and perform quality assurance reviews.
  • Construction Administration (All Candidates): Perform construction oversight and quality assurance reviews for both internal construction crews and client contractors, efficiently resolving RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and engineering real-time solutions for unexpected site conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Licensure: FE Exam completion and registration as an Engineering Intern (E.I.) required; Colorado registration preferred (or ability to obtain via reciprocity). Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is preferred.
  • Experience: 2+ years of progressive experience in structural design, structural assessment, building consulting, or forensics. (Strong candidates tracking closely toward their P.E. with 2+ years of intensive experience will be highly considered).
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of modern and historic construction standards, building envelope systems, load-path mechanics, and code requirements (IBC, IRC, NDS, ASCE 7) for both wood-framed and other building types.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to convey complex technical information clearly to non-technical clients, contractors, attorneys, and stakeholders.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Denver Candidates Only)

  • Must be able to climb ladders, maneuver pitched roofs, access confined spaces (crawlspaces/attics), and lift/carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in temperature extremes and safely maneuver at heights or in active, hazardous construction environments.
  • Dexterity to operate office and field equipment, including specialized testing instruments.
  • In-state travel required; limited out-of-state travel possible. Valid driver's license and clean driving record required.
