Job description

Electrical Engineer – Oil & Gas

Mid-Level

About the Position

As a mid-level Electrical Engineer in the Oil & Gas group, you will support industrial, utility, and oil & gas projects throughout North America with a focus on power system studies, utility distribution engineering, substation support, and detailed electrical design. This role is intended for a strong mid-level engineer who can execute assigned engineering deliverables with limited supervision while collaborating directly with clients, utilities, vendors, and multidisciplinary project teams.

Salary Range: $90,000 - $120,000 / year

The salary range above is based upon the Denver, Colorado labor market.

This opportunity is available to full-time remote candidates. Periodic travel is expected for client meetings, site visits, field investigations, commissioning, and project support.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Perform electrical engineering and design activities for industrial, utility, and oil & gas facilities, including medium-voltage and low-voltage power distribution systems.
  • Prepare computer-based models and perform power system studies using ETAP, SKM, PSS/E, PSCAD, or similar software, including short circuit, load flow, protective device coordination, arc flash, motor starting, harmonic analysis, and related studies.
  • Develop and maintain power system models, validate study results using engineering judgment, and prepare clear technical reports and recommendations for clients and project teams.
  • Support medium and high voltage T&D projects, including overhead and underground distribution systems, utility coordination, distribution upgrades, transmission studies, and construction package development.
  • Support substation, relay, and protection-related engineering activities, including relay coordination, protective relay settings, and control and relaying schematics under the direction of senior engineers.
  • Develop electrical deliverables such as one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, control schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment specifications, calculations, studies, RFIs, and construction packages.
  • Coordinate directly with clients, utilities, vendors, contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to support project execution and resolve technical issues.
  • Participate in client meetings, communicate technical findings, document action items, and support engineering decisions through clear written and verbal communication.
  • Support projects from preliminary design through detailed design, including 30%, 60%, 90%, and issued-for-construction deliverables with oversight from senior engineering staff.
  • Provide field assistance, troubleshooting, startup support, and commissioning support as required.
  • Check the work of designers, drafters, and field personnel for general quality and accuracy as required.
  • Understand and apply applicable codes, standards, and client requirements such as NEC, NESC, IEEE, NFPA 70E, and utility standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Must Have
  • Education: Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited institution; electric power option preferred
  • Experience: 2 - 6 years of relevant electrical engineering, utility engineering, industrial power systems, consulting engineering, or oil & gas experience
  • Licensure: FE/EIT is preferred; progress toward PE licensure is strongly preferred
  • Experience performing power system studies using ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, PowerFactory, Milsoft, or similar software
  • Preferred exposure to PSS/E, similar transmission planning and power system analysis tools
  • Knowledge and familiarity with medium-voltage and low-voltage power systems; experience with distribution, transmission, substation, or industrial power systems preferred
  • Utility distribution experience, including exposure to overhead and underground distribution systems, utility standards, and utility coordination
  • Exposure to protective relaying, relay coordination, SEL relays, substation systems, or utility interconnections is preferred
  • Previous interactions with clients, customers, contractors, utilities, vendors, and other project stakeholders
  • Ability to assist with client contacts and communication pertaining to specific assignments, meetings, and project deliverables
  • Ability to execute assigned engineering tasks with limited supervision while maintaining quality, schedule, and budget expectations
  • Ability to travel up to 25% across states for field work, client meetings, commissioning, and project support as needed
  • Possesses effective written and oral communication skills
  • Good interpersonal and people skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a full-time remote work environment
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
