What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Night SCADA Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Night SCADA Operator, you need a solid understanding of SCADA systems, process control, and troubleshooting, often supported by technical training or an associate degree in electrical, instrumentation, or automation fields. Familiarity with industry-standard SCADA platforms, alarm management software, and remote monitoring tools is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for responding to alarms and coordinating with on-site teams. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and uninterrupted operations during night shifts when immediate in-person support may be limited.

What are Remote Night SCADA operators?

Remote Night SCADA operators are professionals who monitor and control industrial processes, such as those in energy, water, or manufacturing sectors, during overnight shifts using SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems. They work remotely to ensure that processes run smoothly, respond to alarms, and address any technical issues that arise outside of regular business hours. Their role is crucial for maintaining operational efficiency, safety, and quick response to emergencies when on-site staff may be limited. Remote Night SCADA operators often collaborate with field technicians and report anomalies to ensure continuous, reliable operations.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Night SCADA operators, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Night SCADA operators often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting technical issues without on-site support, managing alarms or critical incidents with limited supervision, and maintaining vigilance during overnight shifts. To address these, operators typically rely on thorough training, access to detailed documentation, strong communication with on-call engineers or supervisors, and robust monitoring tools. Staying organized and proactively communicating any recurring issues can also help improve operational efficiency and ensure system reliability.

Job description

Vestas Eolica, S.A.U.  > Service > Global Service Operations > Remote Operations Center EMEA

As a Remote Operations Engineer at the Madrid ROC, you will be part of the strategic core ensuring the global availability of our wind turbine fleet. This high-level technical position focuses on real-time monitoring, advanced diagnostics, and remote incident resolution, directly affecting performance optimization and the reduction of the cost of energy.

What You Will Do

  • As part of our 24/7 Monitoring Team, your role is built upon three strategic pillars:
  • The Technical "Problem Solver": You will use advanced SCADA and SAP tools to diagnose why a multi-million euro machine has stopped. Your role is to determine with precision whether you can fix the issue with a single click from Madrid or if a technician must be dispatched to the field
  • The Effective Communicator: You will manage communications with customers and field technicians during urgent incidents. You demonstrate the ability to translate complex technical problems into simple, professional solutions via both phone and email
  • Operational Resilience: In a 24/7 environment, your responsibility is paramount. You will maintain high standards and attention to detail-especially during night shifts-remaining consistently meticulous with data and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

What we are looking for

  • At Vestas, demonstrated real-world experience and effective problem-solving count more than formal degrees. We are looking for technicians who know the field and want to take their careers to the next digital level:
  • Experience: Minimum 1 year in the Wind Industry (specifically as a Field Technician or in Control Centers). Direct experience with Vestas Turbines is especially valuable
  • Alternative Experience: In the absence of wind industry experience, at least 3 years of demonstrable experience in complex hydraulic, electrical, or mechanical systems is required
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Energy) or Technical Associate Degree (FP Superior) in Electronics, Automation, Robotics, or Renewables
  • Languages: Intermediate English (B1/B2). You are fluent enough to respond to technical emails and handle emergency calls in an international environment
  • IT Proficient: Proficiency with diagnostic tools; prior use of SCADA and SAP is highly valued
  • Availability: Ability to work in a 24/7 rotating shift system (including nights and weekends)

What We Offer

Unique Hybrid Flexibility: Office-based in Madrid during standard shifts, with the opportunity to work from home during night shifts and weekends

Stability: A Madrid-based role with travel requirements only on a very occasional basis

Career Growth: An opportunity to shift from field-based work to directing operational strategy at a global control center

Vestas Benefits: Salary commensurate with experience, health insurance, life insurance, Paid Time Off (PTO), and meal allowance (cheque gourmet)

Performance Bonus: An annual 5% bonus tied to meeting Vestas' corporate objectives

At Vestas, we believe that diversity makes us stronger. If you have a disability and are interested in this opportunity, we would be happy to get to know you and adapt the selection process to your needs.

Our commitment to a fair hiring.

At Vestas, we evaluate all candidates solely based on their professional experience, education, and relevant skills.
