What does a remote network firewall engineer do?

A Remote Network Firewall Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, managing, and monitoring firewall systems to protect an organization's networks from unauthorized access and cyber threats. Working remotely, they configure firewall policies, perform regular security assessments, troubleshoot network security issues, and ensure compliance with security standards. They also work closely with IT and security teams to update firewall rules and respond to incidents, ensuring the organization's data remains secure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote network firewall engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Network Firewall Engineer, you need a solid understanding of network protocols, firewall configuration, and security principles, usually backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with firewall platforms (such as Cisco ASA, Palo Alto, or Fortinet), security tools, and certifications like Cisco CCNP Security or CompTIA Security+ is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you address security risks while supporting remote teams.
