A Remote Network Engineer is an IT professional who designs, implements, manages, and troubleshoots computer networks from a remote location. They ensure network performance, security, and connectivity for businesses without being physically present at the worksite. Their responsibilities may include configuring routers and switches, monitoring network traffic, supporting cloud-based infrastructure, and resolving network issues remotely. This role often requires strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and expertise in network protocols and security.

How to become a remote network engineer?

The qualifications needed to start a job as a remote network engineer include a degree, job experience, and the computer and technical setup to access and monitor the network from your location. Employers prefer candidates with a bachelor’s degree in computer science of information technology. You may wish to pursue voluntary professional certification, including becoming a Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP). You need an understanding of internet protocol security (IPsec) and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) routing protocol. You should possess expert-level skills in network diagnostic and analytics software.

What does a remote network engineer do?

As a remote network engineer, you work from home to set up and monitor computer systems and network security. Your duties include working with both hardware and software. You may install new components, protect data with firewalls, assist with system development, and troubleshoot any system issues. You may also communicate with clients to understand their requirements and design a network that matches their needs. Other responsibilities may involve providing support for end-users and performing updates to ensure the system is functioning efficiently. You may work for a specific company or provide freelance services as a remote network engineer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote network engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Network Engineer, you need in-depth knowledge of networking fundamentals, troubleshooting, and security, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields and certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+. Familiarity with network monitoring tools (e.g., Wireshark, SolarWinds), VPNs, firewalls, and cloud networking platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and self-motivation are critical soft skills for remote collaboration and independent issue resolution. Job description

Ncyber is seeking a Platform Infrastructure Engineer to design, build, automate, and maintain the infrastructure that powers mission-critical software systems supporting the National Security Community. This role owns the engineering of our compute, virtualization, container, and automation platforms. You'll work closely with software engineers, network engineers, security engineers, and technical leadership to deliver reliable, scalable infrastructure while helping modernize our architecture toward cloud-native and hybrid-cloud environments. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys building platforms rather than simply maintaining servers.

You'll help design, deploy, and operate the infrastructure that supports production software systems from development through deployment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design and maintain Linux-based infrastructure platforms
  • Engineer and operate private cloud environments built on OpenStack
  • Build repeatable infrastructure using Infrastructure-as-Code and configuration management
  • Design and maintain containerized application platforms using Docker
  • Automate infrastructure deployment, configuration, and lifecycle management
  • Support cloud migration initiatives across AWS and Google Cloud
  • Build CI/CD and GitOps workflows that improve deployment consistency
  • Engineer observability solutions including centralized logging and monitoring
  • Support Apache NiFi dataflow infrastructure
  • Troubleshoot complex infrastructure, virtualization, networking, and storage issues
  • Improve platform reliability, scalability, and security
  • Produce architecture documentation and operational runbooks
  • Mentor junior engineers and participate in technical design reviews

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
  • 5+ years designing or operating Linux infrastructure
  • Strong Linux administration experience (Ubuntu/Debian preferred)
  • Experience operating virtualized or private cloud environments
  • Experience with Docker and containerized workloads
  • Experience with Ansible or similar configuration management tools
  • Experience automating infrastructure deployments
  • Experience troubleshooting production infrastructure
  • Strong scripting skills (Python, Bash, or similar)

Preferred Experience

Experience with several of the following:

  • Virtualization / Hypervisor Solutions (OpenStack, Vmware, Proxmox, etc.)
  • Apache NiFi
  • Elasticsearch / Kibana
  • GitOps workflows
  • Terraform or OpenTofu
  • AWS or Google Cloud
  • Observability and monitoring platforms (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, Splunk)
  • PostgreSQL
  • Containerization and orchestration platforms (Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, etc.)
  • AI infrastructure (vLLM, Open WebUI, Jupyter)

Benefits

  • 401(k) match of 6% with immediate vesting
  • Highly subsidized Health, Dental, and Vision insurance
  • Legal Resources Plan
  • Flexible Time Off
  • 10 Federal Holidays
  • Life insurance, short and long-term disability coverage paid by the company
  • Free sodas and snacks

Compensation

We believe in paying fairly and competitively based on the value each team member brings to the role. Individual compensation is determined by factors such as skills, experience, education, certifications, location, and market data. The anticipated salary range for this position is $116,587 - $154,200 annually.

We are proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer and do not discriminate based on race, religion, gender, national origin, color, age, military service eligibility or veteran status, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, maritalstatus, or any other protected class. We encourage and support workplace diversity.
