What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote narrative designer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Narrative Designer, you need expertise in storytelling, scriptwriting, and interactive narrative structure, often supported by a background in creative writing or game design. Familiarity with game engines (such as Unity or Unreal), collaborative tools (like Google Workspace or Slack), and narrative design software (e.g., Twine, Inklewriter) is commonly required. Strong communication, adaptability, and self-motivation are vital soft skills for managing remote collaboration and feedback. These competencies ensure cohesive, engaging narratives that align with gameplay and team goals, even in a distributed work environment.

How does a remote narrative designer typically collaborate with other team members during the game development process?

As a Remote Narrative Designer, you'll frequently collaborate with writers, game designers, artists, and developers through digital communication tools such as Slack, Zoom, and project management platforms. Regular meetings and brainstorming sessions are essential for aligning story content with gameplay mechanics and visual direction. Clear documentation and timely feedback are crucial for ensuring your narrative aligns with the overall vision, especially when working across different time zones. Building strong communication habits and being proactive in sharing updates will help you integrate smoothly with the rest of the team.

How much do remote narrative designers make?

Remote narrative designers typically earn between $50,000 and $90,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of projects. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in storytelling and game development can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $100,000. Many remote positions also offer benefits such as flexible schedules and opportunities for professional growth.

Do you need a degree to be a remote narrative designer?

A degree is not strictly required to become a remote narrative designer, but many employers prefer candidates with a bachelor's degree in fields like creative writing, game design, or related areas. Strong storytelling skills, experience with writing tools, and a portfolio of work are often more important for this role.

Job description

Let's face it, a company whose mission is human transformation better have some fresh thinking about the employer/employee relationship.
We do. We can't cram it all in here, but you'll start noticing it from the first interview.
Even our candidate experience is different. And when you get an offer from us (and accept it), you get way more than a paycheck. You get a personal BetterUp Coach, a development plan, a trained and coached manager, the most amazing team you've ever met (yes, each with their own personal BetterUp Coach), and most importantly, work that matters.
This makes for a remarkably focused and fulfilling work experience. Frankly, it's not for everyone. But for people with fire in their belly, it's a game-changing, career-defining, soul-lifting move.
Join us and we promise you the most intense and fulfilling years of your career, doing life-changing work in a fun, inventive, soulful culture.
If that sounds exciting-and the job description below feels like a fit-we really should start talking.
The Opportunity
At BetterUp, we're building a new kind of partnership with our customers - one that drives deep transformation. The key to any long-lasting transformation is strong change management - that's where you come in. As part of the first team of Senior Change Activation Partners, you'll play a central role in helping transformations for our enterprise clients be successful. With our clients, you'll co-create change management strategies, ensuring the right folks are prepared at the right time with the right messages, at every level of the client organization. You'll develop communications strategies that build belief, inspire action, and sustain momentum across. This role is about leading change through communications-not just delivering messages, but shaping the story that makes change possible. This is not a back-office, post-sale support role. This is a front-line, high-trust, high-impact leadership seat.
What you'll do
  • Lead change communications strategy for major enterprise deployments, designing narratives and messaging architectures that inspire adoption and alignment.
  • Translate complex business and talent challenges into clear, compelling change narratives - and advise on how to keep the momentum going.
  • Build trust and influence across senior stakeholders, acting as a thought partner, advisor, and driver of change.
  • Map stakeholders and cascade paths, identifying champions and skeptics, and designing strategies that build trust across complex organizations.
  • Develop and deliver campaigns across multiple channels (email, live events, digital platforms, executive forums) with quality and consistency that earns credibility.
  • Equip managers and frontline leaders with toolkits, talking points, and coaching to act as multipliers of change.
  • Sense and adapt in real time-establish listening loops and use insights to refine messaging and interventions.

Who you are:
  • 8+ years of experience in high growth transformation, change activation, change management and story telling
  • Deep experience in change management, organizational transformation, or human capital consulting.
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to craft and deliver a narrative that moves hearts and minds.
  • Multi-disciplinary skillset that spans change, comms, and experience design-you can think like a consultant and deliver like a marketer.
  • Creative and tactical chops, with an eye for quality in copy, visuals, and user experience.
  • Resilience and adaptability in managing intense launch cycles and quieter sustain phases without burning out.
  • A builder's mindset-you thrive in ambiguity, enjoy writing the playbook, and don't need a big team to get started.
  • Enterprise client experience, ideally in large-scale, global organizations where complexity is the norm.

The base salary range for this role is as follows:
$145,000 - $180,00: New York City, San Francisco and Seattle
$130,000 - $162,000: All other locations
Hybrid Work Policy & Hub Locations
BetterUp is a hybrid company that values in-person collaboration. Our US hub locations include: Austin, TX; New York City, NY; San Francisco, CA; and the Arlington, VA.

  • If you are not located near a hub: You will work as a fully remote employee. This remote role will require travel up to 50% of the time for client engagements and internal BetterUp purposes.

This role is open to candidates across the US. Please review the above carefully and ensure the applicable model works for your situation before applying.
