Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION
Director of Finance & Reporting
Reports to: Chief Financial Officer
Location: Remote (US)
Compensation: $130,000 - $160,000 base + bonus + benefits
About Brains and Motion Education
Brains and Motion Education is a national after-school enrichment provider operating thousands of programs annually across multiple states. We deliver enrichment classes, structured recess, sports programs, full-service after-school enrichment, and summer camps to schools, districts, and parents. We are a venture-backed, growth-stage company with a clear path to scale and an ambitious operational agenda.
The Opportunity
This is a hands-on senior finance role with direct CFO partnership. You will own the accuracy and interpretation of our financial reporting, lead investigation of revenue and invoicing issues, and oversee multi-state compliance. You will not maintain a steady state - you will help build one. The right candidate sees the legacy issues, imperfect data, and outsourced accounting environment as an opportunity rather than a problem.
What You Will Own
Financial reporting and Consero oversight
  • Review every monthly financial deliverable produced by Consero (our outsourced accounting partner) before it reaches the CFO. Identify variances, errors, classification issues, and gaps.
  • Hold Consero accountable on timeliness, accuracy, and analytical quality. Serve as the day-to-day working partner to Consero's VP of Finance.
  • Own the monthly financial reporting package, including variance explanations, trend analysis, and the executive-ready narrative.
  • Partner with Consero on month-end close mechanics; you do not own the close itself but you own whether the output is right.

Revenue and invoicing investigation
  • Build ad hoc reconciliations between Salesforce contracts and programs, scheduled delivery, invoicing in Sage Intacct, and revenue recognition in the general ledger.
  • Investigate revenue recognition disconnects driven by program changes, cancellations, and schedule modifications.
  • Identify root causes of invoicing delays, missing POs, and aged AR. Drive resolution with Revenue Operations and Consero.
  • As patterns emerge, partner with VP of Finance Business Processes and Systems to design durable processes and system controls that stop issues before they occur.

Multi-state registrations and compliance
  • Support tax and state compliance with supplemental financial information requirements.

Strategic and ad hoc support
  • Support the CFO on banking and financing diligence and compliance.
  • Support audit follow-up and prevention of repeat findings.
  • Perform financial analysis on profitability, fill rates, and program-level economics as needed.
What You Bring
  • 7-12 years of progressive finance and accounting experience, including review and analysis of the financial close and reporting process.
  • Multi-unit services background - education, staffing, hospitality, professional services, franchise operations, or similar.
  • Strong Excel and analytical skills. Comfortable building reconciliations and investigative analyses in imperfect data environments.
  • Experience supporting audits, financings, or lender relationships.
  • Direct experience overseeing or managing an outsourced accounting function
  • Ability to understand tax compliance issues.
  • Excellent written communication. Can produce a one-page narrative that is accurate, clear, and decision-ready.
  • CPA strongly preferred. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • Familiarity with Sage Intacct, Salesforce, Paycom, or comparable systems is a plus.
What Success Looks Like
  • Within 30 days: Has reviewed three monthly closes; identified the top recurring reporting issues; built a working relationship with Consero's VP of Finance.
  • Within 90 days: Has completed an end-to-end revenue reconciliation for at least one product line; produced the first lender-ready monthly reporting package; Has established working rhythm with the licensing and compliance specialist.
  • Within 6 months: Has resolved the legacy state registration backlog; reduced reporting errors reaching the CFO by at least 75%; partnered with VP of Finance Business Processes and Systems on at least two durable process improvements.
Benefits
  • Medical Insurance
  • Dental Insurance
  • Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) with employer match
  • Basic Life / Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance
  • Voluntary Short-Term Disability
  • Voluntary Additional Life / AD&D Insurance
  • Voluntary Hospital Indemnity
  • Flexible Time Off
