What is a Remote MSP System Administrator?

A Remote MSP (Managed Service Provider) System Administrator is an IT professional who manages, monitors, and maintains the technology infrastructure of clients from a remote location. They handle tasks such as server administration, software updates, network security, and technical support, all through remote tools and platforms. Working for an MSP means supporting multiple clients, often simultaneously, and ensuring their systems remain secure, stable, and efficient. This role requires strong problem-solving skills and familiarity with a variety of IT environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote MSP System Administrator?

To thrive as a Remote MSP System Administrator, you need strong expertise in network management, server administration, cybersecurity, and a solid understanding of Windows and Linux environments, often supported by certifications like CompTIA A+, Network+, or Microsoft certifications. Familiarity with remote monitoring and management (RMM) tools, ticketing systems, and backup solutions is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, clear communication, and the ability to work independently are critical soft skills in this remote role. These skills ensure efficient client support, secure network operations, and effective incident resolution across diverse client environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote MSP System Administrators, and how can they be effectively managed?

Remote MSP System Administrators often encounter challenges such as managing multiple client environments, troubleshooting issues without onsite access, and balancing urgent support tickets across various time zones. To effectively manage these challenges, strong organizational skills, clear communication, and robust remote monitoring tools are essential. Proactively documenting procedures, maintaining regular client updates, and leveraging automation can also help streamline workflows and reduce response times.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate and administer NASA’s Power Platform, Power BI, and automation services in alignment with NEAS governance, security baselines, and change-control processes.
  • Provide Tier 2/3 support across Dev/Test/Prod environments, including NAMS role configuration, connector governance, and license/DLP oversight.
  • Monitor workspace usage, capacity, audit logs, and service health, and publish dashboards and operational metrics.
  • Enforce governance standards related to workspaces, sharing controls, connector guardrails, gateway operations, and data security requirements.
  • Prepare governance documentation such as CAB packages, MOUs, connector artifacts, and compliance evidence.
  • Implement ALM using managed solutions and pipelines, including deployment planning, rollback procedures, configuration snapshots, and run-history retention.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and knowledge-sharing support to junior staff and peers to strengthen team capability.
  • Coordinate team workflows, task dependencies, delivery schedules, and cross-functional collaboration to support timely and efficient execution.
  • Review technical work products for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with NEAS standards.
  • Communicate with developers, stakeholders, vendors, and customers to resolve issues, clarify requirements, and support ongoing operational decisions.
  • Support platform reliability through capacity planning, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and issue resolution.
  • Maintain clear and accurate documentation including configuration baselines, testing records, and operational procedures.
  • Design and deploy solutions using Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, Dataverse, Copilot Studio, and related automation technologies.
  • Develop and optimize data models, Power Query logic, DAX calculations, and RLS to support performance requirements.
  • Support intake and discovery processes, gather requirements, develop PDDs, and translate them into JIRA work items.
  • Coordinate testing, UAT, pipeline deployments, delivery progress, and risk tracking while ensuring strong stakeholder communication.
  • Contribute to NEAS Communities of Practice through training materials, documentation, and best-practice guidance.

Qualifications
Required

  • Enterprise experience administering Power Platform, Power BI, or similar analytics/automation platforms under governance and security controls.
  • Power BI administration experience and strong modeling skills (DAX, Power Query, RLS).
  • Experience with Power Platform governance including NAMS roles, DLP policies, connector controls, gateway operations, and managed environments.
  • Experience implementing ALM with solutions, pipelines, deployment planning, and rollback strategies.
  • Familiarity with Entra ID authentication, TLS 1.2+, ExpressRoute posture, SSP documentation, and change-control processes.
  • Ability to gather requirements, develop PDDs, document technical needs, and manage work in JIRA or similar tools.
  • Strong communication, coordination, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Engineering, Business, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a NASA Public Trust background investigation.

Desired

  • Experience with JIRA configuration, workflow management, or Agile delivery environments.
  • Knowledge of enterprise data services, cloud-based architectures, automation pipelines, or data governance practices.
  • Experience supporting NASA programs or working within NASA centers.
  • Microsoft certifications (Power Platform, Power BI, Entra ID, Azure).
