While both roles involve plant genetics, Remote Molecular Plant Breeding focuses on applying molecular techniques to develop new plant varieties, whereas Remote Plant Geneticists analyze genetic data to understand plant inheritance. Both roles often require similar educational backgrounds and work environments, but their specific objectives differ within the plant science industry.

What are some common challenges faced by remote molecular plant breeders, and how can they be addressed?

Remote molecular plant breeders often encounter challenges related to limited access to physical lab facilities, field sites, and direct collaboration with on-site colleagues. To address these, professionals typically leverage advanced data-sharing platforms, cloud-based bioinformatics tools, and regular virtual meetings to maintain effective communication and project workflow. Establishing clear protocols for sample collection and data management with on-site partners is also crucial. By utilizing digital collaboration tools and maintaining strong communication channels, remote breeders can efficiently contribute to breeding programs and research initiatives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote molecular plant breeding specialist?

To thrive as a Remote Molecular Plant Breeding Specialist, you need a solid background in plant genetics, molecular biology, and quantitative genetics, often supported by an advanced degree in plant sciences or a related field. Familiarity with molecular marker technologies, bioinformatics tools, and data analysis software such as R or SAS is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective remote communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These qualifications and abilities are essential for designing successful breeding programs, analyzing genetic data, and collaborating efficiently within distributed research teams.

What is remote molecular plant breeding?

Remote molecular plant breeding is a specialized field in plant science that uses molecular biology techniques and digital tools to improve plant traits from a distance. Professionals in this area analyze genetic data, use molecular markers, and employ bioinformatics software to select desirable traits without needing to be physically present in the lab or field. This approach allows for collaboration with global teams, increased efficiency, and the ability to work with large data sets remotely. It is especially valuable for developing crops with improved yield, disease resistance, and adaptability.

Technical Sales Representative - PNW & Treasure Valley

Ohalo

Portland, OR โ€ข Remote

Full-time

Re-posted 12 days ago

Job description

Position: Technical Sales Representative
Territory: Washington · Oregon Columbia Basin · Treasure Valley ID/OR
Location: Remote / US
Type: Full-time

The Opportunity

Ohalo is hiring Technical Sales Representatives to help build and scale our commercial presence. This is a remote, field-based role with ownership of a defined geographic territory (Washington and Oregon Columbia Basin, Treasure Valley ID/OR). You will be responsible for managing our Founders Farm program within the designated territory, developing strong relationships with growers and partners, and most importantly driving seed sales as we bring new products to market.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in an early-stage environment, enjoys being in the field, and wants to help shape how a new agricultural technology is commercialized.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take ownership in managing the defined sales territory (Washington and Oregon Columbia Basin, Treasure Valley ID/OR)
  • Serve as the primary commercial point of contact for Ohalo's Founders Farm program in the defined sales territory
  • Drive seed sales growth within the territory, from lead generation through close, carrying a quota
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with growers and other key stakeholders
  • Educate customers on Ohalo's technology, value proposition, and product performance
  • Collect and relay market feedback, customer insights, and competitive intelligence to internal teams
  • Professionally represent Ohalo at field days, grower meetings, and industry events
  • Travel regularly within the territory (~50%), including day trips and occasional overnight travel
  • Maintain accurate activity tracking and forecasting using company tools and CRM systems

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in agriculture, agronomy, plant science, business, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Deep passion for transformative change in agriculture and a genuine entrepreneurial mindset — you see yourself as the owner of a small business that is part of a much larger industry shift
  • 5+ years of experience in agricultural sales, seed sales, agronomy, or a related commercial role
  • Background in adjacent crops such as carrots, onions, or sugar beets, or vegetable seed sales strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with volcanic soil regions and regional vegetable processor networks is a plus
  • Familiarity with grower operations and agricultural production systems; knowledge of potato production is a bonus but not required
  • Proven ability to build trust-based relationships with growers and partners
  • Self-starter comfortable working remotely with minimal oversight
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively within the assigned territory, with some required extended travel outside of the assigned sales geography
  • Strong communication, organization, and time-management skills

Compensation

This role includes a competitive base salary, performance-based variable compensation, and an equity component.
