Job description

The Role

Government Executive is seeking a Senior Reporter to join our newsroom covering the federal workforce, agency leadership and Congress. You will report on federal agency operations and management, with a focus on agencies such as the departments of Homeland Security, Treasury, State and Veterans Affairs, and the Social Security Administration, as well as how White House decisions impact career federal employees. You will also cover key developments on Capitol Hill, including oversight hearings, government shutdowns, funding and policy debates and legislation shaping federal agencies and the workforce. This position reports directly to the Executive Editor. This role can accommodate remote or hybrid work, but candidates must be based in the Washington, D.C., area.

Responsibilities:

  • Break news and produce daily reporting on federal agencies, Congress and the White House
  • Write longer stories, features and interviews
  • Cover oversight hearings, shutdowns, budget fights and other major policy developments on Capitol Hill
  • Report on how agency decisions affect federal workers and how government programs are run
  • Develop original reporting through strong sourcing across agencies, Congress and federal employee groups
  • Use data, reports and public records to produce clear and accurate stories
  • Cover events and conferences and represent Government Executive as a moderator, panelist or speaker at live and virtual events

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of journalism or related experience covering government, policy or similar fields
  • Strong reporting and writing skills with a record of accurate daily journalism
  • Ability to explain complex issues in clear, direct language
  • Experience working in a fast-moving newsroom
  • Strong understanding of AP Style
  • Comfort speaking on panels, podcasts and at events
