What is a remote midwife?

A Remote Midwife provides virtual prenatal, postpartum, and sometimes intrapartum support through telemedicine. They offer guidance on pregnancy, birth preparation, lactation, and newborn care via video calls, phone, or messaging. While they do not provide hands-on care, they collaborate with healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive maternity support. This role is ideal for experienced midwives looking to support families from a distance while maintaining flexibility in their work schedule.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a remote midwife?

Remote Midwives typically provide prenatal education and consultations, assess patient well-being through virtual check-ins, monitor progress and risk factors, review lab results, and offer guidance on birth plans and postpartum care. They use secure telehealth tools to communicate with clients, maintain up-to-date documentation in EHR systems, and collaborate with other healthcare providers when in-person care is needed. In this role, you may also educate and reassure expectant families, connect them with local resources, and adjust care plans as situations evolve. The remote setting often allows for a flexible schedule but requires strong organizational and time-management skills to balance multiple clients efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote midwife?

To thrive as a Remote Midwife, you need comprehensive midwifery training or nursing with midwifery certification, active licensure, and strong clinical assessment abilities. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, secure communication tools, and electronic health record (EHR) systems are essential for providing virtual care. Exceptional listening skills, compassion, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly are valuable soft skills in this field. These competencies help ensure safe, effective support for expectant parents remotely, building trust and fostering positive health outcomes.
