Job description

As a Roadway CAD Technician, you will play a key role in bringing infrastructure projects to life by providing high-quality technical drafting support across a diverse portfolio of municipal and transportation initiatives. Working closely with project managers, engineers, and design teams, you will help review and refine engineering drawing packages to ensure accuracy, compliance, and constructability.

In this role, you’ll contribute throughout the full project lifecycle, from early planning and conceptual layouts to preliminary and detailed design, as well as permitting documentation. You’ll have the opportunity to work on impactful projects that shape communities, applying your technical expertise to develop precise drawings, support design coordination, and streamline project delivery.

This position is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented, collaborative, and eager to grow their skills while contributing to meaningful infrastructure improvements.

  • Review roadway, drainage, traffic control, and utility construction plans, specifications, and engineering calculations to develop accurate design drawings and contract documents.
  • Prepare and revise detailed roadway design plans, profiles, cross-sections, and corridor models using CAD software, converting engineering concepts, sketches, and redline markups into completed design deliverables.
  • Produce preliminary, intermediate, and final roadway plan sets in coordination with engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary design teams to ensure compliance with client standards, DOT requirements, and project objectives.
  • Develop and maintain engineering documentation, including quantity calculations, plan sheets, exhibits, and technical reports, supporting project design, permitting, and construction activities.
  • Create and modify alignments, surfaces, corridors, and grading models utilizing Autodesk Civil 3D to support roadway design and construction plan development.
  • Perform quality control reviews of plan sets to ensure drafting accuracy, design consistency, and compliance with applicable roadway design standards and specifications.
  • Coordinate with survey, drainage, utility, and transportation engineering teams to integrate design elements and resolve conflicts throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support project delivery by preparing construction plans, erosion control plans, signing and pavement marking layouts, and associated engineering exhibits for public and private transportation projects.

  • Relevant training in CAD, drafting, or design technology, including technical coursework, certifications, or equivalent real-world experience
  • Experience with transportation engineering, preferably TxDOT.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D (or similar design platforms such as MicroStation or OpenRoads), with experience in plan production, drafting standards, and collaboration tools used in municipal or transportation projects
