Department OverviewThis role is within Motorola Solutions' North America Post Sale Engineering Department. The group's main business is the implementation of mission critical digital mobile communication systems for Government & Public Safety Communications customers.
Our team is a group inside the Mid-Atlantic (T3) System Integration (SI) engineering organization with experts focused on System Design who work with experts in all Motorola disciplines.
Job Description

Note: This is a remote position with travel (25-50%) to support projects in the T3 (Mid-Atlantic) territory, primarily focused on T3 South, which includes the states of WV & VA.

The Sr Staff Engineer will be responsible for the public safety design and implementation of solutions for Motorola's ASTRO 25 and adjacent technologies for State and Local government agencies. We are looking for Engineers who are energized by delivering solutions that truly make a difference.

The Sr Staff Engineer will work with a field team of Project Managers, Systems Engineers, System Technologists, Construction Managers, and Customer Service Managers, and will be responsible for leading technical aspects of the assigned project until system acceptance. Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Design and implementation of the radio network including infrastructure, subscribers, mobile backhaul and WAN and CEN (Customer Enterprise) networks.

  • High level of customer and consultant interaction involving customer design reviews, customer witnessed staging and acceptance testing events, coverage acceptance testing, live system upgrades, and troubleshooting efforts.

  • System buildout, configuration and acceptance testing in both lab staging and field environments

  • Radio coverage testing, frequency analysis and interference mitigation

  • Radio system licensing (FCC/Industry Canada)

  • Preparation of system fleetmap, encryption schema, and radio programming templates

  • Live system cutovers and upgrades

  • Complete system documentation

Desired Skills/Knowledge:

  • Radio Frequency Engineering principles

  • Land / Mobile Radio Engineering principles

  • Wireless & Wireline communications systems

  • RFDS principles to include antenna and cable selection, transmit combiners, receive multi-couplers, and lightning protection systems.

  • P25 Land Mobile Radio terminology and two-way subscriber radio provisioning methods.

  • Experience with Motorola ASTRO 25 architecture is a plus.

  • Construction of remote communication sites to include: site selection, grounding, compound development, tower and shelter requirements.

  • Fortinet and Juniper firewalls, Nokia 7705 series routers, Juniper SRX/MX (Junos) series routers, HP/Aruba and Juniper switches

  • Remote access using SSH, SCP, SFTP, RDP

  • Knowledge with point-to-point Microwave systems, Microwave RF & Network design

  • FCC licensing and frequency search

  • Software applications integration, Application Protocol Interfaces (API) concepts, computer operating systems, and the OSI model.

  • Networking protocols and devices including OSPF, ISIS, BGP, MPLS, SIP, RTP, SNMP, NAT, routers, switches, and stateful packet firewalls.

  • Knowledge of physical layer technologies, such as fiber, copper, and microwave connectivity

Desired Abilities:

  • Create design documents and drawings to provide information to project teams about system construction and configuration (Familiarity with Microsoft, Google, etc. office productivity/drawing software tool packages)

  • Exhibit excellent troubleshooting, critical thinking, and analytical skills with the ability to seek out other internal company expertise when needed.

  • Work remotely, primarily from a home office, with no local supervision. Take initiative, lead customer-facing meetings, collaborate with other colleagues, customers, and third party service professionals to drive results, and change priorities with little notice.

  • Work on multiple, concurrent projects and balance priorities.

  • Exhibit excellent communications and technical writing skills with the ability to summarize complex technical concepts clearly, and present to both technical and non-technical team members.

  • Learn to use company-supplied software systems and tools to implement, configure, and test IP network-based systems.

  • Learn to use company-supplied software systems and tools to model and test radio coverage

  • Learn to use company-supplied software systems and tools to assist engineers and technicians with setup and troubleshooting of RF components and systems.

  • Learn to configure, and troubleshoot applications and operating systems on IP network devices, servers, or on virtualization platforms.

  • Learn to debug new software installations, review log files, and work with development engineers to resolve issues.

Desired Certifications, Some or All:

  • GROL (General Radiotelephone Operator License), Amateur Radio Operator License, or equivalent experience

  • COMPTIA A+, Network+, Security+

Target Base Salary Range: $95,000 - $110,000 USD
