About BioDigital, a division of Anatomage
BioDigital, a division of Anatomage, operates the largest cloud platform for interactive 3D visualization of human anatomy, conditions, and procedures. Our immersive technology is used globally by patients, educators, and healthcare professionals as an engaging way to understand health and medicine.
About the Role
We are seeking a Medical Illustrator / Science Lead contractor with a strong background in medical illustration and hands-on experience in immersive media production to lead the scientific direction of a portfolio of active healthcare education projects. In this role, you will own projects from early scoping through final delivery, guiding cross-functional teams while ensuring scientific accuracy, clinical relevance, and production feasibility. You’ll work across a range of experiences—including procedural training, mixed reality simulations, multi-user environments, and web-based anatomy education—supporting clients such as medical device companies, surgical training programs, and pharmaceutical brands. This is a part-time contract role with an expected commitment of approximately 80 hours per month, depending on project load. You’ll inherit a well-documented portfolio of active work with a structured knowledge transfer, allowing you to step right in and produce.
Qualifications
Required
● Background in medical illustration, biomedical visualization, or a related field with strong anatomy or clinical expertise
● Experience leading science or content direction for immersive media (XR/VR/AR) and QA’ing deliverables
● Strong understanding of 3D production pipelines and technical constraints
● Proven ability to translate client feedback into clear, actionable production guidance
● Experience creating storyboards, production guides, or similar pre-production documentation
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills
● High attention to detail and organizational skills
● Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and visual communication skills
● Access to a Meta Quest 3 device for QA
Nice to Have
● Experience with medical device or procedural training content
● Familiarity with project management tools such as Asana or Notion
Engagement Details
● Contract freelance position, invoiced monthly
● Approximately 10–20 hours per week, with up to 80 hrs per month
● Fully remote, with overlap expected during US Eastern or Central business hours
● Initial engagement tied to current project portfolio, with potential for ongoing work
Requirements

Project Management & Science Direction
● Lead scientific planning and direction across multiple concurrent projects
● Define anatomy scope, interaction logic, and asset requirements
● Own and develop production guides (PGs) as the scientific foundation for each project
● Balance scientific accuracy, clinical relevance, and technical feasibility
Scientific Review & Quality Assurance
● Conduct ongoing scientific QA throughout production
● Validate anatomy accuracy, interaction logic, clinical relevance, and edge cases
● Provide structured, actionable feedback to 3D and production teams
● Ensure feedback is specific enough for execution without additional clarification
● Escalate discrepancies between client expectations and scientific realities early
Immersive Direction
● Translate complex clinical concepts into clear, production-ready direction for a team of
3D artists and engineers to execute
● Develop storyboards, science briefs, and supporting documentation
● Guide teams with clear pre-production materials
● Ensure consistency and clarity across scientific and visual outputs
Cross-Functional Collaboration
