What is a remote medical scribe?

A Remote Medical Scribe is a professional who assists healthcare providers by documenting patient encounters in real time from a remote location. They listen to patient visits, often via a secure audio or video connection, and enter detailed notes into the electronic health record (EHR) systems. This support allows healthcare providers to focus more on patient care and less on paperwork. Remote medical scribes play a crucial role in improving clinical workflow efficiency and ensuring accurate, thorough medical documentation.

What does a remote medical scribe do?

As a remote medical scribe, your job is to take notes and help document each encounter a physician has with a patient. Unlike in-person scribes, remote scribes often transcribe comments from recordings provided by the physician rather than writing things down as they occur. You may add the notes to a chart, help investigate discrepancies in comments, or correct machine transcriptions. Remote medical scribes sometimes perform other clerical tasks to help reduce the time physicians need to spend on paperwork. Like all medical workers, remote medical scribes are responsible for maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality, which may require setting up a private work environment or remote office.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote medical scribe?

To thrive as a Remote Medical Scribe, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and documentation standards, often supported by a relevant certification or experience in healthcare settings. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and transcription software is typically required. Attention to detail, strong written communication, and the ability to multitask efficiently are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accurate, timely documentation and effective support for healthcare providers, directly impacting patient care quality and workflow efficiency.

What are some common challenges remote medical scribes face, and how can they be addressed?

Remote medical scribes often encounter challenges such as maintaining clear communication with healthcare providers during virtual patient encounters and adapting to different documentation systems. Working from home can also require strong self-discipline to manage distractions and meet tight deadlines. To address these challenges, it's important to develop strong organizational skills, become proficient with electronic health record (EHR) systems, and establish a quiet, dedicated workspace. Regular feedback sessions with providers can also help ensure documentation accuracy and improve workflow.

Job description

Travel Medical Assistant

If you're a Medical Assistant who would rather bring preventive care into patients' homes than spend every day in one clinic, this full-time W2 travel role puts you where your work can make an immediate difference. You'll complete scheduled in-home wellness visits across U.S. markets, helping patients stay current on preventive care while working independently in a mobile field environment.

The Opportunity

This is a nationwide Travel Medical Assistant role connected to Prince George's County, Maryland, with travel based on patient coverage needs across the U.S. You'll support preventive visits such as Annual Wellness Visits, Medicare wellness visits, and Well-Child Visits. The focus is not urgent care; it is patient-centered preventive care, care-gap support, relationship-building, and accurate documentation.

All required equipment will be provided. This is a strong fit for someone who enjoys hands-on patient care, can manage a field-based workflow, and is comfortable with frequent travel assignments that may change week to week.

What You Will Own
  • Complete scheduled home-based wellness visits with patients
  • Support Annual Wellness Visits, Medicare wellness visits, and Well-Child Visits
  • Gather patient information and document visit details in an EMR/EHR system
  • Perform basic point-of-care support such as vitals, UAs, A1Cs, screenings, and questionnaires
  • Help patients feel comfortable, respected, and unrushed during visits
  • Manage a mobile field workflow while traveling between patient homes
  • Follow scheduled visit plans and communicate documentation accurately and professionally
Travel Expectations

This role is not limited to Prince George's County or Maryland. Candidates must be comfortable traveling anywhere within the United States based on business and patient coverage needs.

  • Nationwide travel may be required, potentially on a week-to-week basis
  • Schedules are typically provided about 2 weeks in advance
  • Schedules include where you'll be going, when visits are scheduled, and how long visits are expected to last
  • Local or same-day visits may require use of your own reliable vehicle
  • Eligible mileage is reimbursed at $0.725 per mile for patient-to-patient travel
  • For out-of-state or extended assignments, covered travel expenses include transportation, car rental when needed, flights when needed, hotel, and meals
Schedule
  • Full-time
  • Monday-Friday
  • 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
  • Field-based role with home visits
Compensation

The expected total compensation range is USD 31 Hourly.

What Makes You a Strong Fit
  • 1+ year of Medical Assistant experience
  • Medical Assistant credential, certification, diploma, or equivalent qualification
  • Hands-on clinical Medical Assistant experience
  • Reliable vehicle and a valid driver's license
  • Comfort working independently in patient homes
  • Comfort with local, same-day travel as well as extended travel assignments
  • Willingness and ability to travel nationwide based on patient coverage needs
  • Ability to manage frequent travel and changing market needs
Nice-to-Haves
  • Experience conducting Annual Wellness Visits
  • Experience conducting Well-Child Visits
  • Prior home visit, mobile care, field-based care, or community health experience
  • Experience documenting patient visits in an EMR/EHR system
What Success Looks Like

You'll be successful in this role if you can combine strong Medical Assistant fundamentals with the independence needed for mobile care. You'll help patients complete important preventive visits, support better health outcomes, and bring care to people who may not otherwise access it easily.

At Urrly, fairness matters. We use AI to review every application against the same clear requirements for the role. Candidates are evaluated only on job-related factors such as skills, certifications, and experience, not personal attributes.
