We are seeking a highly motivated senior-level Surgical Coder who is looking to step away from production coding, and shift focus toward leading peer review & education efforts for assigned specialties. 

This job can be performed 100% remotely and out of state candidates will be considered.

The primary responsibility of the Coding Quality Educator is to support and lead coding quality assurance, peer quality reviews, ongoing education, and professional development for Coding Services staff through regular auditing, training, onboarding, coding analysis, and educational initiatives. This role serves as a senior coding expert for assigned specialties and is responsible for ensuring accurate CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS, and other applicable code selection by all coding staff, including both abstraction and edit-based coding functions.

The Coding Quality Educator is expected to possess extensive knowledge regarding current ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, regulatory requirements, payer guidelines, and industry best practices, and apply this expertise when conducting audits, providing education, researching coding issues, and supporting assigned specialties.

The individual in this position will: 

• Serve as a coding expert for surgical specialties.

• Conduct coding audits and peer quality reviews for new and existing coders in accordance with department standards.
• Maintain records of audits, education activities, and quality review findings in designated databases for reporting, reference, and trending purposes.
• Work closely with Audit, Compliance & Education (ACE) and Coding Services leadership regarding audit findings, educational opportunities, provider trends, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Provide training, education, onboarding, and ongoing professional development for new and existing coders in conjunction with department standards.
• Utilize audit findings, peer quality reviews, and coding trends to monitor coding quality and identify opportunities for individual and department-wide education.
• Develop, coordinate, and deliver educational presentations and training programs for targeted specialty areas, coding groups, and department initiatives.
• Assist with researching coder questions and provide effective, accurate guidance and supporting documentation related to coding decisions, audits, and regulatory requirements.
• Identify and research correct coding for new CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS, and other regulatory changes, communicating and educating staff regarding updates and impacts.
• Perform edit analysis and coding quality analysis to identify educational opportunities, workflow improvements, edit modifications, and process enhancements.
• Participate in optimizing workflows and operational processes to support process improvement, coding accuracy, efficiency, and ongoing training needs.
• Collaborate across departments to improve overall revenue cycle health, coding consistency, compliance, and operational effectiveness.
• Assist with the development, maintenance, and updating of desk procedures, training materials, coding references, and educational resources.
• Support the planning, coordination, and education of newly hired coders, including onboarding, competency assessment, and mentorship activities.
• Make recommendations regarding coding education resources, certification preparation, continuing education opportunities, and external coding courses to enhance team expertise.
• Provide regular coder feedback, coaching, and development support to promote coding accuracy, professional growth, and adherence to departmental quality standards.
• Assist leadership with special projects, quality initiatives, coding analysis, and department goals related to team success, coder development, and continuous improvement.

Requires 3+ years of surgical coding experience with demonstrated expertise in procedural and diagnosis coding.  Knowledge/understanding of teaching physician guidelines is strongly preferred.  CPC or equivalent AHIMA coding certification required; CPMA or other specialty certification is helpful.  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential to success.  Must demonstrate strong computer and Microsoft Office software skills. EMR (Epic) and Practice Management software experience is also a required competency.  The ideal candidate will be proficient in reporting and analytics.
