Remote Mechanical Software Engineer information

What is a remote mechanical software engineer?

A Remote Mechanical Software Engineer is a professional who combines expertise in mechanical engineering with software development skills to design, analyze, and optimize mechanical systems using computer-based tools—all while working remotely. They often develop or customize simulation software, automation scripts, and control systems to improve product design and testing processes. Their work bridges the gap between physical mechanical components and digital technologies, enabling efficient virtual prototyping, analysis, and sometimes the integration of IoT or embedded systems. Remote work allows these engineers to collaborate with global teams and contribute to projects from anywhere with a reliable internet connection.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a remote mechanical software engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Mechanical Software Engineer, you generally need a strong background in mechanical engineering, software development, and a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with CAD software (like SolidWorks or AutoCAD), programming languages (such as Python, C++, or MATLAB), and version control systems is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and collaborative communication skills are crucial, especially when working with distributed teams. These competencies ensure effective product development, seamless remote collaboration, and the successful integration of mechanical and software components.

How does a remote mechanical software engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams despite working offsite?

Remote Mechanical Software Engineers frequently use collaboration tools like video conferencing, project management software, and cloud-based design platforms to work closely with hardware engineers, product managers, and other software developers. Regular virtual meetings and clear documentation are essential for aligning on project requirements and troubleshooting issues in real time. This remote setup often requires proactive communication skills and adaptability to different time zones, but it can also provide greater autonomy and flexibility. Building strong relationships with team members and being responsive in digital channels are key to successful collaboration.

About Switch

At Switch, we don’t just design, build and operate data centers—we are enabling the technology of the future. Led by Founder & CEO, Rob Roy, we believe in revolutionary innovation, operational excellence and the principle of karma. Switch is where talented people come together to EVOLVE the digital world.

We believe that innovation isn’t just about technology—it’s about the people, culture, and purpose that make it happen. Every Switch team member contributes to a mission greater than themselves: to create the world’s most advanced digital infrastructure that powers the progress of humanity.

The Role: DCO Facilities Chief Engineer

This role serves as the senior technical authority for facilities infrastructure within Data Center Operations. You provide subject matter expertise across electrical, mechanical, environmental, and life safety systems that support mission-critical operations. The role leads complex problem resolution, supports commissioning and design reviews, and drives continuous improvement across campus infrastructure without direct people management responsibility.

What You’ll Do
  • Provide senior technical leadership for critical power, cooling, and environmental systems.

  • Lead technical response efforts during infrastructure events and support root cause analysis activities.

  • Participate in Change Advisory Board reviews and ensure operational readiness for planned changes.

  • Support commissioning, startup, and deployment of new equipment across local and regional campuses.

  • Review mechanical and electrical design documents and provide operational feedback to engineering, construction, and vendors.

  • Drive improvements to maintenance strategies, automation efforts, and operational processes.

  • Lead technical working sessions to resolve recurring facilities challenges.

  • Review and approve procedures for maintenance activities, safety programs, and OSHA compliance.

  • Develop infrastructure performance metrics and provide reporting to leadership.

  • Mentor technicians and engineers to strengthen technical capability within DCO.

  • Deliver technical training related to arc flash safety, power systems, mechanical systems, and control sequences.

  • Support compliance audits and certification activities.

  • Travel as required to support multi-campus initiatives.

What We’re Looking For
  • Recognized technical authority in mission-critical facilities infrastructure.

  • Strong judgment during high-impact operational events.

  • Ability to translate technical findings into operational improvements.

  • Clear communication across technicians, engineers, vendors, and leadership.

  • Commitment to safety, compliance, and disciplined execution.

What You’ll Bring
  • 8 or more years of experience in facilities, electrical, or mechanical systems within data center or comparable mission-critical environments.

  • Advanced knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems including generators, switchgear, transformers, UPS systems, ATS or STS units, PDUs, chillers, cooling towers, pumping systems, and fire suppression systems.

  • Provide technical leadership for all hydronic infrastructure, including chilled water plants, cooling towers, heat exchangers, pumps, piping distribution networks, and water treatment systems, ensuring optimal performance, efficiency, and operational resilience.

  • Oversee preventive maintenance, condition assessments, and lifecycle management of hydronic and water treatment assets, leveraging data-driven analysis to improve system efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental, health, safety, and regulatory requirements related to water management programs while driving continuous improvement initiatives aligned with Switch operational standards.

  • Strong understanding of control systems and sequences of operation.

  • Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and electrical drawings.

  • Experience supporting commissioning, design review, and infrastructure deployment.

  • OSHA 30 certification required; additional relevant certifications preferred.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering preferred, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
