Remote Mechanical Engineering information

What is remote mechanical engineering?

Remote mechanical engineering involves performing mechanical engineering tasks such as designing, analyzing, and testing mechanical systems from a location outside of a traditional office or job site. Remote mechanical engineers use computer-aided design (CAD) software, simulation tools, and collaboration platforms to communicate with teams and manage projects online. This arrangement allows for flexibility and can enable engineers to work with companies and clients around the world. Remote work in this field is increasingly popular due to advancements in technology and the ability to securely share and analyze complex data online.

How do remote mechanical engineers typically collaborate with on-site teams and manage hands-on project components?

Remote mechanical engineers often rely on a mix of digital collaboration tools, such as CAD software, video conferencing, and project management platforms, to stay connected with on-site teams. While most design and analysis tasks can be completed remotely, they may coordinate closely with local engineers or technicians for tasks that require physical presence, such as prototyping or testing. Clear communication and regular status updates are essential to ensure project goals are met and any issues are addressed promptly. Building strong relationships with on-site team members helps bridge gaps and facilitates smooth project execution.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote mechanical engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical design, analysis, and problem-solving, typically backed by a relevant engineering degree and, in some cases, a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools (like ANSYS), and collaborative project management systems is crucial. Strong communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help remote engineers effectively coordinate with distributed teams and manage independent tasks. These abilities are vital for delivering high-quality engineering solutions, meeting deadlines, and maintaining productivity in a remote work environment.

What is the difference between Remote Mechanical Engineering vs Remote Mechanical Design Engineer?

Search & Comparison IntentFocus on engineering roles involving analysis and systemsFocus on design, CAD work, and product development

Remote Mechanical Engineering involves a broad range of engineering tasks such as analysis, testing, and project management, often requiring a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Remote Mechanical Design Engineers primarily focus on CAD modeling, product design, and prototyping, with skills in CAD software. Both roles are common in manufacturing and engineering industries, but they emphasize different aspects of the product development process.

Can a remote mechanical engineer work remotely?

Yes, many mechanical engineering roles can be performed remotely, especially those focused on design, analysis, and simulation using CAD software and other digital tools. However, some positions requiring on-site testing, manufacturing, or equipment access may require in-person presence or hybrid arrangements.

Job description

Company Description
CRB is a leading provider of sustainable engineering, architecture, construction and consulting solutions to the global life sciences and food and beverage industries. Our more than 1,400 employees provide best-in-class solutions that drive success and positive change for our clients, our people and our communities. CRB is a privately held company with a rich history of serving clients throughout the world, consistently striving for the highest standard of technical knowledge, creativity and execution.
Job Description
We are seeking a highly experienced and technically proficient Mechanical Engineer IV to lead the design and engineering of HVAC and mechanical utility systems across complex, multidisciplinary projects. This role is responsible for managing the mechanical discipline scope, budget, and schedule through all phases of project delivery-from site selection and master planning to commissioning and startup.
The Mechanical Engineer IV will serve as a technical leader and mentor, overseeing the work of junior and senior engineers and designers. This position requires deep knowledge of mechanical systems, strong coordination skills, and the ability to interface with clients, architects, engineers, construction managers, vendors, and trade partners. Depending on the project, this role may serve as the Lead Mechanical Engineer or Senior Mechanical Engineer, with responsibilities tailored accordingly.
Preference would be for candidates to be located near CRB office locations and can work in the office in a hybrid capacity.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the mechanical discipline on projects of varying size and complexity, managing scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Act as Engineer-of-Record and direct the work of mechanical engineering and design staff.
  • Develop and review technical documentation including:
    • Load calculations, utility assessments, and energy modeling
    • Design reports, code evaluations, and equipment specifications
    • P&IDs, plans, schedules, and installation details
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure a fully integrated and constructible design.
  • Conduct and lead field surveys, identify non-compliant conditions, and support field reporting.
  • Provide advanced support during construction, including RFI responses, submittal reviews, punch list development, and progress reporting.
  • Drive quality assurance through document reviews and technical verification.
  • Mentor and train less experienced engineers and designers.
  • Lead system design programming and master planning efforts.
  • Support proposal development, task planning, and project scheduling in collaboration with Project Managers.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering (mechanical focus) from an ABET-accredited program.
  • PE (Professional Engineer) license in good standing.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience for Lead Mechanical Engineer roles.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience for Senior Mechanical Engineer roles.
  • Advanced experience in HVAC, mechanical utility, and piping system design and implementation.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, and building codes.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in life sciences (pharmaceutical, biotech, laboratory) or food & beverage industries.
  • Advanced knowledge of GMP manufacturing environments.
  • Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • LEED, WELL, or other sustainable design credentials or experience.
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as ASHRAE, SMACNA, ISPE, FDA, ISO, NFPA, and OSHA.
  • Advanced experience in plumbing design and field survey leadership.
  • Experience using Revit plugins (e.g., Enscape, Unifi) and parametric tools (e.g., Dynamo, Grasshopper, Rhino).
  • Strong coordination skills with cross-discipline teams, vendors, and construction partners.
  • Intermediate experience troubleshooting mechanical systems.
  • Ability to develop and deliver internal training presentations.
  • Willingness to travel for client development, project execution, and training opportunities.
