What does a remote mechanical design engineer do?

A Remote Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing mechanical systems and products, but works from a location outside of the traditional office. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed models and drawings, collaborate with team members through digital communication tools, and ensure that designs meet project specifications and industry standards. Their work often involves problem-solving, researching new materials or technologies, and making improvements to existing products or systems. Effective communication and self-management are crucial since they work remotely. This role is common in industries like manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and consumer products.

How does a remote mechanical design engineer effectively collaborate with on-site teams and manage project communication?

As a Remote Mechanical Design Engineer, effective communication is crucial for ensuring project success. Most teams use collaborative platforms like CAD cloud storage, project management tools, and regular video meetings to bridge the distance. You'll need to proactively update stakeholders, share design files in compatible formats, and clarify requirements or feedback. Building strong relationships with on-site engineers and participating in virtual design reviews are key to staying aligned with team objectives and project timelines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote mechanical design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Mechanical Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, 3D CAD modeling, and product design, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with industry-standard CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or CATIA, along with familiarity with PLM systems, is essential, and certification in these tools is advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and self-motivation distinguish top performers in a remote work setting. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering innovative, accurate designs and collaborating efficiently with distributed teams.

What is the difference between Remote Mechanical Design Engineer vs Mechanical Drafter?

AspectRemote Mechanical Design EngineerMechanical Drafter
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering or related field; CAD certificationsHigh school diploma or associate degree; CAD training
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, remote work possible, collaborative teamsDrafting rooms, CAD labs, remote work less common
Industry UsageProduct design, engineering firms, manufacturingDrafting and documentation, manufacturing support
Search/Comparison IntentDesign, engineering, product developmentDrafting, technical documentation

The Remote Mechanical Design Engineer focuses on creating and developing mechanical products using CAD software, requiring engineering credentials and design expertise. In contrast, a Mechanical Drafter primarily prepares technical drawings and documentation, often with less formal education. While both roles utilize CAD tools and may work remotely, the engineer's role involves more design innovation and engineering analysis, whereas the drafter supports manufacturing and production documentation.

Structural & Architectural Design Engineer

Jobgether

On-site, Remote

Full-time

Posted 12 days ago

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Structural & Architectural Design Engineer based in Netherlands.

As a Structural & Architectural Design Engineer, you'll contribute to the design of a major AI data center infrastructure project with demanding structural and operational requirements.
You'll work across building envelope, internal layouts, structural load-bearing systems, life safety, lighting, and technological infrastructure pathways.
Your designs will need to support high-density AI computing and liquid-cooled equipment while maintaining resilience, security, and operational efficiency.
You'll collaborate closely with MEP engineers and other technical specialists to ensure architectural and structural solutions are fully integrated.
The role also involves reviewing design-build packages, identifying risks, supporting permitting, and ensuring compliance with applicable building and fire-safety regulations.
You'll work in an international, technically complex environment where practical engineering judgment and attention to detail are highly valued.
This is an opportunity to apply your structural and architectural expertise to next-generation critical infrastructure with significant future scalability.

Accountabilities
  • Design building envelope systems, including exterior walls, facades, roofing, and thermal and moisture insulation suitable for critical data center environments.
  • Develop internal partitioning and space-planning solutions, including white-space and gray-space separation, security zones, fire compartments, corridors, and access-control layouts.
  • Perform structural load calculations for raised floors, POD and racking areas, and rooftop mechanical equipment such as coolers and pump skids.
  • Calculate floor-loading capacity for IT racks, including high-density liquid-cooled racks and CDU placement zones.
  • Design tunnels and technological infrastructure pathways for cable trays, piping, and other critical services.
  • Develop lighting concepts for white space, gray space, offices, exterior areas, and security zones in line with data center operational requirements.
  • Coordinate architectural and structural drawings with MEP teams, accounting for equipment loads, ceiling heights, structural clearances, cooling-pipe routes, and electrical distribution.
  • Review architectural and structural components of design-build packages, identifying technical risks, inconsistencies, and potential value-engineering opportunities.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable local building codes, fire-safety regulations, and facility resilience requirements.
  • Coordinate with local authorities and relevant stakeholders on structural and architectural permitting matters.
  • Support long-term space planning and design strategies that allow the facility to scale as infrastructure and computing requirements evolve.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of professional experience in structural and/or architectural design, ideally involving industrial, warehouse, manufacturing, critical infrastructure, or similarly complex facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience designing load-intensive facilities, including raised floors, heavy stationary equipment, and structures requiring detailed load calculations.
  • Direct data center experience is beneficial but not mandatory; relevant experience from industrial, warehouse, manufacturing, or comparable environments is fully applicable.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or Revit.
  • Experience with at least one structural calculation package, such as Tekla Structures, Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis, IDEA StatiCa, or Dlubal RFEM.
  • Proven ability to coordinate multidisciplinary designs and manage interfaces between structural, architectural, and MEP disciplines.
  • Strong understanding of structural design principles, building layouts, space planning, and technical coordination.
  • Ability to identify design risks, inconsistencies, and practical optimization opportunities in complex engineering documentation.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, particularly when working with international engineering teams and external stakeholders.
  • English proficiency sufficient for international project documentation, technical discussions, and coordination.
  • Working knowledge of local building codes and permitting processes is an advantage.
  • Experience with Tier III/IV data center design standards is desirable.
  • Familiarity with modular or POD-based data center construction is a plus.
  • Experience designing facilities for high-density, liquid-cooled IT environments is beneficial.
  • Polish language skills are an advantage.
  • Experience supporting greenfield or brownfield projects through construction phases is highly valued.
Benefits
  • Full-time position with a fully remote working arrangement from Europe.
  • Opportunity to contribute to a major, large-scale AI data center development in Europe.
  • Exposure to advanced high-density computing and liquid-cooling infrastructure.
  • Broad technical scope spanning architecture, structural engineering, space planning, life safety, lighting, and infrastructure integration.
  • Opportunity to collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, MEP specialists, construction partners, and local authorities.
  • Significant involvement in a technically complex critical-infrastructure project designed for future scalability.
  • International working environment with exposure to modern data center design and construction practices.
  • Opportunity to apply transferable industrial or infrastructure design expertise to next-generation AI facilities.
