What is a remote materials science?

A Remote Materials Science job involves researching, analyzing, and developing materials while working remotely. Professionals in this field study the properties and applications of metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites, often using virtual simulations, data analysis tools, and remote lab access. They collaborate with teams via digital platforms, conduct experiments, and optimize materials for industries like aerospace, electronics, and healthcare. This role requires strong technical skills, self-motivation, and the ability to communicate findings effectively with remote teams.

What are the typical responsibilities of a remote materials science professional, and how does the remote aspect impact daily work?

As a Remote Materials Science professional, your daily tasks often include analyzing materials data, conducting research projects, running simulations, preparing technical reports, and collaborating with engineering or R&D teams via virtual meetings. The remote environment means you’ll rely heavily on digital collaboration tools for sharing results and coordinating experiments, and may need to be proactive in communicating with colleagues across time zones. While you may occasionally visit laboratories for hands-on testing, most work is completed independently from your home or a remote office. This setup allows for increased flexibility but also requires strong self-motivation and organizational skills to manage multiple projects efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the remote materials science position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Remote Materials Science, you need a solid background in materials engineering or chemistry, data analysis, and scientific research, typically with at least a bachelor's or master's degree in a related field. Familiarity with simulation software (such as MATLAB, COMSOL, or Materials Studio), laboratory data management tools, and possibly industry certifications can be highly beneficial. Strong communication, time management, and problem-solving skills are essential for effective remote collaboration and project completion. These capabilities are crucial for contributing to innovative materials solutions and achieving research or product development goals in a remote setting.

Business Development Manager - Data Center ( Remote)

Solstice Advanced Materials, Inc.

Sunnyvale, CA • On-site, Remote

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Retirement, PTO

Re-posted 18 days ago

Job description

As a Global Business Development Manager, Data Centers here at Solstice, you will serve as the primary technical and commercial bridge between Solstice and the world's most influential technology architects. You will be responsible for positioning our advanced low-GWP refrigerant portfolio and thermal solutions as the gold standard for next-generation chipset and facility cooling.

In this role, you will drive long-term adoption of Solstice technology by embedding solutions into the future roadmaps of hyperscalers and leading chip designers, influencing next-generation data center thermal strategies.

You will report directly to our Global Strategic Marketing Manager, Data Centers, and you will work out of our Sunnyvale or Remote location on a flexible work schedule.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and nurture deep technical relationships with thermal management teams and hardware architects at major hyperscalers and semiconductor companies
  • Act as a subject matter expert to advocate for HFO-based cooling technologies (e.g., two-phase direct-to-chip) versus traditional cooling methods
  • Identify early-stage hardware design cycles and ensure Solstice thermal solutions are designed into future chip architectures
  • Provide strategic "outside-in" market insights to guide internal roadmap development (3-5 year horizon)
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Strategic Marketing and R&D to develop white papers, case studies, and performance benchmarks
  • Represent Solstice in global industry bodies (e.g., OCP, ASHRAE) to influence data center cooling standards
  • Translate complex thermal and chemical performance data into compelling business value propositions for stakeholders

YOU MUST HAVE:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, or related field. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

  • Commercial Skills: Proven ability to navigate complex organizations and build broad stakeholder relationships without a direct sales quota
  • Strategic Experience: Background in strategic marketing, business development, or product management with a focus on long-term market development
  • Communication: Ability to translate complex technical data into clear and compelling messaging
  • Travel Requirements: Ability to represent the company at global industry forums and customer sites
  • Operational Conditions: Comfortable working in a fast-paced, highly technical, cross-functional environment

WE VALUE:

  • Experience in hyperscaler ecosystems or engagement with leading semiconductor firms
  • Advanced expertise in thermal management or data center applications
  • Familiarity with industry bodies such as OCP or ASHRAE
  • Demonstrated success influencing early-stage technology adoption or roadmap integration
  • Strong leadership and stakeholder engagement skills across technical and commercial audiences
  • Self-starter mindset with ability to build credibility in new or evolving markets
