Job description

Brookhaven Lab's Computing and Data Sciences directorate (CDS) is accelerating computing and domain science by providing a complete ecosystem that safely and seamlessly provides the expertise, compute and data resources, and research environment to drive discovery.
CDS employs a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach to its applied math, artificial intelligence, and computing research and uses broad capabilities to target scientific challenges, working with fellow researchers at the Lab and many global partners.
The focus of this position is mainly on designing new topological quantum error correcting codes and analyzing their properties. We are also interested in quantum algorithm / quantum code co-design, as well as code design for specific hardware architectures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
We are looking for a postdoctoral research associate who can collaborate closely with the PI on projects related to topological quantum error correcting codes. The work is theoretical, mainly consisting of devising and using mathematical tools for analysis and varying degrees of coding for testing ideas.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics, Mathematics or Computer Science within the last 5 years.
  • Research experience in quantum information science, particularly quantum error correcting codes.
  • Candidates must have excellent written and oral communication skills, be self-motivated and able to work both independently and as a part of a team.
  • Ability to interact effectively and work closely with the PI and collaborators.
  • Proven ability to disseminate research results by writing manuscripts and giving academic presentations.
  • Candidates must be interested in quantum error correcting codes, and algorithm / code codesign.
  • Aptitude for analytical work and ability to code efficiently.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Familiarity with topological codes
  • Expertise in tensor networks
  • Expertise in training Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, in particular graph neural networks.
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
  • Demonstrated commitment to working safely, acting ethically, and taking personal accountability for operational excellence.

Other Information:
  • This is a fully remote position with the option to be onsite
  • This position has an initial 1-year term, with the possibility of renewal contingent on performance and funding availability.
  • BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.
  • Candidates must have received a Ph.D. by the commencement of employment.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $ $74,050 - $122,550/ year.
