Job description
The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing is seeking a part-time faculty educator to support graduate-level instruction in advanced physiology and pathophysiology. The successful candidate will bring broad expertise in integrative human physiology and disease mechanisms and will help students apply biomedical science to clinical assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and management decisions across the lifespan.
Working collaboratively with nursing faculty, the educator will deliver rigorous, clinically relevant online learning experiences; assess student learning; support student success; and contribute to continuous curriculum improvement.
Responsibilities
Teaching and Course Leadership
- Coordinate and teach graduate-level courses in advanced physiology and pathophysiology for nurse practitioner, nurse anesthesia, and other graduate nursing learners in collaboration with faculty.
- Integrate normal physiology, altered function, cellular and molecular mechanisms, genetics and genomics, clinical manifestations, diagnostic findings, and physiologic responses to treatment across major organ systems and across the lifespan that prepare clinicians for clinical management.
- In collaboration with the Instructional Design, Technology, and Support team, develop and maintain measurable learning outcomes, updated course materials, online learning resources, and instructional activities aligned with program outcomes and applicable professional and accreditation standards.
- Use evidence-based online pedagogy and active-learning approaches, including clinically authentic cases, team-based learning, and technology-enhanced instruction, to strengthen clinical reasoning and knowledge application.
- Collaborate with faculty across advanced physiology/pathophysiology, health assessment, pharmacology, and specialty courses to promote horizontal and vertical curriculum integration and avoid unnecessary content gaps or duplication.
- Maintain an organized, accessible course site and communicate course expectations, syllabi, schedules, grading criteria, and learning resources clearly and consistently.
- Support other faculty or teaching assistants (TA's) if utilized in the courses.
- Provide several synchronous sessions throughout the semesters as directed by the program leadership
Assessment and Student Support
- Grade student work consistently and provide timely, specific, and actionable feedback.
- Monitor student progress, identify learners who may need additional support, and work with course and program leaders on appropriate academic support or remediation.
- Maintain regular virtual office hours and respond to student questions within established courses and school expectations.
- Demonstrate effective, respectful, and professional communication with students, staff, faculty, and program leaders.
Curriculum Quality, Service, and Professional Development
- Participate in course planning, curriculum mapping, program evaluation, and continuous quality-improvement activities, including review of student and course outcome data.
- Contribute to alignment with the AACN Essentials, CCNE standards, and standards applicable to nurse practitioner and nurse anesthesia education.
- Attend relevant course, program, and faculty meetings.
- Maintain current knowledge in physiology, pathophysiology, health-professions education, online teaching, and the candidate's area of specialization.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree or higher in physiology, pathophysiology, biomedical sciences, or a closely related discipline; candidates with a relevant clinical graduate degree must demonstrate substantial advanced expertise in physiology and pathophysiology.
- Demonstrated breadth in integrative or systems physiology across multiple organ systems and the lifespan.
- Experience teaching physiology, pathophysiology, or closely related biomedical science in graduate, medical, nursing, or other health-professions education.
- Evidence of effective teaching, assessment of student learning, and commitment to student success.
- Ability to teach effectively in an online environment and to use a learning-management system and common educational technologies.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, collaboration, organization, and time-management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Earned doctoral degree in physiology, pathophysiology, biomedical sciences, health professions, or a closely related field.
- At least two years of successful teaching in graduate health professions physiology/pathophysiology education, with evidence of effectiveness across multiple organ systems.
- Experience teaching nurse practitioner or nurse anesthesia students and translating biomedical science into clinically relevant learning.
- Experience with course coordination, curriculum design, competency-based education, simulation, case-based learning, online course development, and educational assessment.
- Knowledge of the AACN Essentials, CCNE standards, and relevant nurse practitioner and nurse anesthesia educational standards.
- Record of scholarship or dissemination in physiology, pathophysiology, health-professions education, or teaching and learning.
- Current professional licensure or certification when applicable to the candidate's discipline and assigned responsibilities.
This is a non-ranked, remote, 0.51 FTE faculty appointment and is benefits-eligible. The faculty must maintain a secure and reliable environment for remote teaching and student communication.

About Johns Hopkins University
Sourced by ZipRecruiter
Gilman believed that teaching and research go hand in hand—that success in one depends on success in the other—and that a modern university must do both well. He also believed that sharing our knowledge and discoveries would help make the world a better place. In 145 years, we haven’t strayed from that vision. This is still a destination for excellent, ambitious scholars and a world leader in teaching and research. Distinguished professors mentor students in the arts and music, humanities, social and natural sciences, engineering, international studies, education, business, and the health professions. Those same faculty members, along with their colleagues at the university’s Applied Physics Laboratory, have made us the nation’s leader in federal research and development funding every year since 1979. That’s a fitting distinction for America’s first research university, a place that has revolutionized higher education in the U.S. and continues to bring knowledge and discoveries to the world.
