Remote Marine Automation Engineer information

What is a remote marine automation engineer?

Remote Marine Automation Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and maintain automated systems on marine vessels and offshore platforms, often working from remote locations. They ensure that critical systems such as navigation, propulsion, and safety operate efficiently and reliably, using advanced technologies and remote monitoring tools. Their work helps improve vessel performance, safety, and operational efficiency, and often involves troubleshooting and supporting equipment through remote diagnostics. These engineers may collaborate with onsite crews and other technical teams to resolve issues and optimize system performance.

How does a remote marine automation engineer typically collaborate with vessel crews and on-site engineers?

Remote Marine Automation Engineers often work closely with vessel crews and on-site engineers via digital communication tools such as video calls, remote desktop support, and specialized monitoring platforms. They provide real-time troubleshooting, system diagnostics, and guidance during maintenance or upgrades, ensuring minimal downtime for maritime operations. Effective collaboration relies on clear communication and a solid understanding of both automation systems and the day-to-day realities faced by crew members. This role may also involve coordinating with other remote experts or vendors to deliver comprehensive solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote marine automation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Marine Automation Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or marine engineering, automation systems, and relevant industry certifications such as STCW or Siemens/ABB product training. Proficiency with PLCs, SCADA systems, remote monitoring software, and marine communication protocols is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills set top performers apart, especially when troubleshooting remotely. These skills ensure safe, reliable vessel operations and quick resolution of automation issues without physical presence on board.

Accountabilities

As a Platform and Automation Engineer, you will lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of internal platforms, automation workflows, and business system integrations.

  • Administer, optimize, and integrate business-critical SaaS platforms, including CRM, customer support, billing, collaboration, and engineering tools.
  • Design and develop automation scripts, internal services, CLI tools, and event-driven workflows using modern programming languages and APIs.
  • Build and maintain reliable integrations between internal business systems to automate data synchronization, user provisioning, and operational processes.
  • Develop internal tools that improve onboarding, access management, business operations, collaboration, and employee productivity.
  • Identify opportunities to introduce AI-powered solutions, including intelligent assistants, workflow automation, knowledge retrieval, and operational analytics.
  • Design automated onboarding, offboarding, identity management, and self-service workflows that simplify internal IT processes.
  • Provide advanced technical support for complex IT issues while focusing on root-cause analysis and long-term process improvements.
  • Implement and maintain security controls, identity management, endpoint protection, and compliance processes aligned with industry standards.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to continuously improve business systems, operational efficiency, and the overall employee technology experience.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate brings extensive platform engineering experience, strong software development skills, and a passion for automation, security, and operational excellence.

  • 8+ years of experience in IT Engineering, Platform Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Business Systems Engineering, including senior-level ownership of internal platforms and automation.
  • Strong programming and scripting skills using languages such as Python, Go, Bash, or similar technologies.
  • Experience administering and integrating business-critical SaaS platforms, including CRM, customer support, billing, collaboration, and engineering tools.
  • Solid knowledge of cloud infrastructure, particularly AWS and GCP environments, networking, identity management, and infrastructure services.
  • Strong experience designing API-driven integrations using REST, GraphQL, OAuth, webhooks, and SaaS SDKs.
  • Deep understanding of macOS and Linux environments.
  • Experience implementing identity lifecycle management, SSO, SAML, SCIM provisioning, Zero Trust principles, and access management.
  • Knowledge of security and compliance frameworks such as ISO 27001, SOC 2, and GDPR.
  • Experience working successfully within remote-first or globally distributed organizations.
  • Familiarity with AI-driven automation, container technologies such as Docker or Kubernetes, and Site Reliability Engineering practices is considered an advantage.
  • Strong analytical thinking, communication skills, ownership mindset, and a proactive approach to continuous improvement.
Benefits:

The company offers a flexible, engineering-driven environment where innovation, automation, and continuous learning are encouraged.

  • Fully remote work model with complete flexibility to work from your preferred location.
  • Opportunity to work with modern technologies, cloud platforms, and AI-powered automation solutions.
  • Engineering culture that encourages innovation, experimentation, and automation-first thinking.
  • Exposure to a modern, open-source-focused technology stack that mirrors production environments.
  • Collaborative international team with opportunities to influence company-wide technology strategy.
  • Supportive remote-first culture focused on autonomy, continuous learning, and professional growth.
