What is a Remote Mapping job?

A Remote Mapping job involves using geographic information systems (GIS), satellite imagery, and spatial data to create or update maps from a remote location. These roles are common in industries like urban planning, disaster response, environmental monitoring, and navigation services. Tasks may include digitizing maps, analyzing geographical data, and ensuring accuracy in mapping systems. Remote mappers often use tools like QGIS, ArcGIS, or OpenStreetMap to perform their work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Remote Mapping position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Remote Mapping, you need proficiency in geospatial analysis, map interpretation, and data accuracy, typically supported by a background in GIS, geography, or related fields. Familiarity with tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, remote sensing software, and satellite imagery is often required, along with certifications like GISP being an advantage. Strong attention to detail, self-motivation, and effective communication skills are valuable soft skills for this position. These abilities are crucial for producing reliable mapping data, collaborating with distributed teams, and meeting project deadlines in a remote work environment.

What are the typical challenges faced in a Remote Mapping role?

Remote Mapping professionals often encounter challenges such as interpreting satellite or aerial imagery with limited on-the-ground context, ensuring data accuracy across diverse locations, and managing large datasets efficiently. Working remotely can also require strong self-discipline and proactive communication to stay aligned with team goals and project updates. Additionally, adapting quickly to new mapping technologies and software is essential to maintain productivity and meet client expectations. Successfully overcoming these challenges leads to high-quality deliverables and career growth within the geospatial industry.

Ideal candidates demonstrate strong customer service, subject matter expertise, mission dedication, and a strong work ethic. To join our team of outstanding professionals, apply today! The Modeling & Mapping Specialist leads enterprise-level modeling, mapping, and repository population efforts under the EASS contract. Reporting to the Program Lead and Lead Architect while directly supporting the Architecture & Data Management Branch (ADMB), this role focuses on building and customizing metamodels compatible with ServiceNow and the Common Service Data Model (CSDM), developing templates for architectural artifacts, and creating accurate as-is and to-be models across all EA domains. The specialist supports the migration from legacy tools to the new EA Repository and Modeling Tool (Ins-Pi/YouDesign), ensuring data integrity, visualization, and alignment with TSA's mission to protect the nation's transportation systems through efficient, data-driven architecture capabilities. Responsibilities * Build and customize metamodels for the EA Repository tool, ensuring compatibility with existing EA data, ServiceNow platform, and Common Service Data Model (CSDM).
* Develop Visio and YouDesign templates for architectural artifacts, views, and models to standardize documentation across enterprise, portfolio, and solution levels.
* Create and maintain as-is and to-be models, enterprise views, and mappings across domains (performance/risk, business, data/information, applications/systems, infrastructure/technology, security).
* Perform data migration, loading, and mapping into the EA Repository/Ins-Pi (YouDesign), including reconciliation across systems to support decision-making and gap identification.
* Support Ins-Pi/YouDesign provisioning and management, including annual subscription handling, unlimited read-only licenses, 12 editor licenses, advisory services, initial setup, configuration, and up to 6 months of remote enablement.
* Provide 3 days of consulting for repository setup/data load and 3 days of YouDesign training to ADMB staff and stakeholders.
* Collaborate with domain architects and integrators to ensure models accurately represent TSA architectures and enable modernization activities (e.g., AI/IAAI infusion).
* Assist in maturity enhancement via the Enterprise Architecture Management Maturity Framework (EAMMF) by ensuring modeled data supports reporting and compliance.
* Address optional or emerging modeling requirements via contract modifications, negotiating costs as needed. Qualifications * US Citizenship.
* Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance.
* Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, Data Management, or related field.
* 7+ years of experience in enterprise modeling, data mapping, and repository management, preferably in federal or large-scale IT environments.
* Strong hands-on experience with metamodel customization, data modeling tools, and migration processes.
* Proficiency in Visio, ServiceNow/CSDM, and similar EA modeling/repositories.
* Knowledge of FEAF v2.0, DoDAF frameworks, and data standards (e.g., metadata, lexicons).
* Excellent technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Skills: * Master's degree.
* Experience supporting TSA, DHS, or other federal agencies with EA modeling and tool transitions.
* Familiarity with Ins-Pi/YouDesign or equivalent Enterprise Architecture & Transformation Management tools, including setup, configuration, and training.
* Background in data mesh principles, AI/ML data modeling, or geospatial data integration.
* Certifications such as TOGAF, CDMP (Certified Data Management Professional), or equivalent modeling credentials.
* Understanding of TSA-specific domains (e.g., aviation security, TSE, biometrics).
