Job description

Job Title: CNC Supervisor
Department: CNC Reports
To: CNC Manager Employment
Type: Full-Time FLSA
Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The CNC Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily CNC machining operations, supervising machine operators and setup personnel, ensuring production schedules are met, and maintaining high standards for safety, quality, efficiency, and equipment performance. This role requires strong hands-on CNC machining knowledge, leadership skills, and the ability to coordinate people, machines, materials, and priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Work Schedule: 2nd shift (2:30pm – 12am)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of CNC operators, machinists, setup technicians and related production staff.
  • Plan, assign, and monitor work to ensure production schedules, quality standards and delivery requirements are met.
  • Review work orders, drawings, specifications, tooling requirements and job priorities before releasing work to the shop floor.
  • Oversee machine setups, first-article inspections, tooling changes, offsets and program verification to ensure parts meet specifications.
  • Troubleshoot CNC machine, tooling, programming and process issues to minimize downtime and scrap.
  • Train, coach and develop employees on CNC operation, setup practices, inspection methods, safety procedures, and company policies.
  • Monitor productivity, machine utilization, cycle times, downtime, scrap and rework; recommend process improvements to improve efficiency and reduce waste.
  • Ensure compliance with quality procedures, inspection requirements, customer specifications and internal documentation standards.
  • Maintain a safe, clean and organized work environment by enforcing safety rules, lockout/tagout procedures, PPE requirements and housekeeping standards.
  • Coordinate with engineering, quality, maintenance, purchasing, planning and management to resolve production issues and support continuous improvement.
  • Assist with preventive maintenance coordination and ensure machines, tools, fixtures and measuring equipment are properly maintained.
  • Maintain accurate production, attendance, training, quality and performance records as required.
  • Participate in employee performance discussions, corrective action, hiring input and workforce planning as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical school, trade certification, or associate degree in machining, manufacturing, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of CNC machining experience, including setup and operation of CNC mills, lathes, or similar equipment.
  • Prior lead, supervisory, or team leadership experience in a manufacturing or machine shop environment preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, work instructions, GD&T, and job travelers.
  • Working knowledge of CNC programming, machine controls, tooling, fixtures, speeds, feeds, offsets and machining processes.
  • Experience using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges, indicators and other inspection equipment.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to lead employees fairly and consistently while maintaining production priorities and quality expectations.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to use production, inventory, quality, or ERP systems (Epicor a plus).
  • Knowledge of manufacturing safety practices, OSHA requirements, PPE and lockout/tagout procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience including assigning tasks to employees and providing feedback
  • Excellent planning skills and ability to prioritize workload
  • Background in close tolerance CNC milling, turning or grinding
  • Able to read blueprints and familiar with advanced GD&T
  • Familiar with precision measuring instruments such as fixed limit gaging, optical comparator and CMM
  • Familiarity with AS 9100 D requirements

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach and move throughout the shop floor for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push or pull materials and tooling within company safety guidelines.
  • Must be able to work around machinery, cutting fluids, metal chips, noise and typical manufacturing conditions.
  • Must wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, hearing protection, safety shoes and other PPE as required.
