What is a remote litigation counsel?

A Remote Litigation Counsel is a licensed attorney who specializes in managing and handling legal disputes and lawsuits for clients, but performs their duties remotely rather than in a traditional office or courtroom setting. They provide legal advice, draft documents, participate in virtual hearings, and represent clients in pre-trial and trial proceedings, all using digital communications and online legal platforms. This role requires strong legal research, communication, and technology skills, enabling the counsel to collaborate with colleagues and clients from various locations. Remote Litigation Counsels are increasingly in demand as law firms and legal departments adapt to flexible and location-independent work environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote litigation counsel?

To thrive as a Remote Litigation Counsel, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, active bar admission, and substantial experience in litigation, legal research, and case strategy. Proficiency in legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, document management systems, and secure video conferencing tools is essential. Excellent written and verbal communication, time management, and the ability to work independently are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure effective remote advocacy, case management, and successful client outcomes in virtual legal environments.

What are the unique challenges of working as a remote litigation counsel compared to traditional in-office litigation roles?

As a Remote Litigation Counsel, one of the main challenges is maintaining effective communication and collaboration with clients, colleagues, and opposing counsel without the benefit of in-person meetings. This requires strong proficiency with digital tools, disciplined self-management, and proactive organization to keep cases on track. Additionally, remote counsels must be adept at preparing and managing electronic discovery, participating in virtual hearings or depositions, and ensuring confidentiality and security in all digital communications. Despite these challenges, the role offers increased flexibility and the opportunity to work with geographically diverse teams and clients.

Job description

Job Title: Member of Legal Staff, Commercial Counsel

Job Type: Full-time

Location: Remote (opportunity to work from our SF office)

The Role

We are looking for a high-potential commercial attorney to join our legal team. This person will initially focus on data-licensing agreements, inbound technology transactions, marketing and procurement contracts, and a broad range of other commercial matters.

The ideal candidate has exceptional academic credentials, strong foundational legal training, and a demonstrated ability to move quickly. Experience with intellectual property and data licensing is valuable, but we care most about strong commercial-contracting fundamentals and the ability to work effectively with a broad range of internal stakeholders in a very fast paced, fluid environment.

This is an opportunity for an ambitious attorney who wants to grow alongside a rapidly scaling company. We expect this person to develop expertise in new areas of the business, take on increasingly sophisticated matters, and materially expand their remit as their capabilities and the needs of the company grow.

What Youโ€™ll Do

  1. Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements, with a particular focus on data licensing, marketing, and inbound technology agreements.
  2. Support other commercial matters, including vendor agreements, partnership agreements, statements of work, and NDAs.
  3. Partner with internal teams to translate legal and contractual risk into clear, business-oriented recommendations.
  4. Develop a deep understanding of the companyโ€™s products, business model, technical environment, and data flows.
  5. Navigate novel legal and commercial questions with limited precedent, exercising strong judgment around when to make a call and when to escalate.
  6. Build and improve contract templates, negotiation playbooks, fallback positions, and self-service resources that help the business move faster.
  7. Identify opportunities to streamline legal operations through AI-enabled contract review, intake, automation, and knowledge management.
  8. Help shape scalable legal processes as the company and its commercial relationships grow in complexity.

What Weโ€™re Looking For

  1. Juris Doctor (JD) and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
  2. Strong academic credentials and foundational legal training.
  3. Significant experience drafting and negotiating sophisticated commercial and technology agreements, particularly involving data, software, technology, or intellectual property.
  4. Excellent legal judgment and the ability to distinguish between theoretical risk and risk that materially impacts the business.
  5. Ability to quickly understand technical products, business models, and unfamiliar legal areas.
  6. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a high bar for clarity and precision.
  7. Strong intellectual curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to develop expertise in emerging areas.
  8. High ownership and comfort operating independently in a fast-moving, highly asynchronous environment.

Nice to Have

  1. Experience at a top-tier law firm focused on technology transactions, commercial agreements, or IP.
  2. Experience with data licensing, artificial intelligence, privacy, or data protection.
  3. Familiarity with legal issues surrounding AI systems, data rights, permitted use, and emerging technology.
  4. Experience working with a venture-backed technology company, AI company, or other high-growth environment.
  5. Hands-on experience using AI or automation to improve legal workflows.
