Introduction
The Connecticut State Library (CSL), Digitization and Digital Collections Services Unit (DDCS) is seeking two (2) part-timeLibrary Technical Assistants (LTA), to support its ongoing digital preservation and access initiatives.
As demand for online access to library collections continues to grow, the LTA will support the ongoing expansion of digitization initiatives that contribute to the long-term preservation of cultural resources and enhance public access to information.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
  • Part-time, 34 hours per week
  • Monday through Friday schedule
  • First shift, 7:00 AM - 4:30 PM
  • Located in Hartford, CT
  • A hybrid schedule will be available based on business needs in accordance with the Telework Policy. The Policy can be found here. The exact schedule will depend on operational needs but has flexibility.

THE ROLE
This position plays a key role in helping CSL preserve and provide access to the agency's significant historic and cultural resources. Working under the direction of DDCS staff, the LTA performs a variety of tasks related to digitizing CSL materials and preparing them for long-term management within CSL's digital collections systems. These tasks include, but are not limited to:
  • Working on basic and intermediate digitization projects
  • Operating a range of digitization equipment and imaging systems in accordance with established technical guidelines and best practices
  • Editing, processing, and preparing digitized image files
  • Performing both single-item and batch ingests of digitized content into CSL's digital collections
  • Fulfilling special digitization requests

The successful candidate shall possess a high attention to detail, the ability to work independently and manage their time effectively, a willingness to learn new equipment, software, and procedures, and the ability to balance multiple projects at one time.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the State Library, a state college or university or a state agency this class is accountable for performing a full range of supportive and/or paraprofessional tasks in any function of the library including acquisition, cataloging, interlibrary loans, reference and circulation.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Circulates books and other library materials using manual and/or automated systems;
  • Performs catalog maintenance activities such as filing, transferring, updating, revising and withdrawing cards/files;
  • Retrieves bibliographic information from automated library systems for circulation, interlibrary loan or copy cataloging purposes;
  • Receives and processes orders for print and non-print materials;
  • Performs and/or supervises performance of stack maintenance activities including sorting, shelving and shifting of material;
  • Assist patrons in locating and using library materials and equipment;
  • Compiles statistics on particular function of library;
  • Pulls and organizes library materials for binding;
  • May enter bibliographic information onto automated library systems;
  • May process interlibrary loan requests by filling those received from other libraries and/or searching for and requesting materials from other libraries;
  • May instruct and supervise students and others in performance of library activities;
  • May check in books and other library materials;
  • May process invoices;
  • May be responsible for monitoring student hours and payroll for those assigned;
  • May correspond with vendors, publishers and library patrons as required;
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of experience in library work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
Two (2) years of college training equalling sixty (60) semester hours with at least twelve (12) semester hours in library science may be substituted for the General Experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience using a book scanner to digitize library materials
• Experience conducting quality review of digitized image files
• Experience using software to edit digitized image files
• Experience adding content to collections in a digital repository
• Experience handling fragile library materials
