Overview Legal counsel responsible for identifying legal risk, especially in healthcare regulations, and proactively managing complex legal matters on behalf of Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. Provides risk assessments and counsel on compliance with state and federal healthcare operations. Responsibilities Provide risk assessments and counsel on compliance with state and federal health care operations and regulations, including federal and state fraud, waste and abuse laws. Assist business development, operations teams, and MLH affiliates in identifying and resolving regulatory matters. Monitor changes in relevant regulatory areas and provide education on those changes to business, operational personnel, and compliance and legal affairs teams. Monitor and interpret changes to and trends in government and legislative policies at the federal, state, or local level, assess impact on the organization, and advise senior management. Recommend and implement specific company responses to changes in governmental and legislative policies. Perform complex research and investigations, design, draft and submit documents concerning legal issues to maintain compliance with various regulations and provide legal interpretation of laws and regulations. Draft and review legal documents and review proposed transactions to ensure maximum benefit to the corporation and minimum exposure to risk. Provide legal advice and assistance, including policy development and management support, on issues related to compliance and regulatory issues. Provide regulatory support and assistance on contract and transaction matters in which MLH may engage. Consult with and provide assistance to other colleagues in Legal services in a highly collaborative and team-oriented fashion. Education & Formal Training Juris Doctorate. Experience Regulatory counsel 5-7 years. Licenses & Certifications Attorney โ€“ Board of Professional Responsibility. Knowledge and Skills Thorough knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations affecting healthcare organizations and physician practices. Ability to understand and prepare complex written materials such as major contracts, business plans, policies and procedures. Strong verbal and written communication skills with all levels of Associates, executives, management, physicians and Board of Directors. Leadership and motivational skills for teams and individuals. Advanced negotiating and conflict resolution skills. Project planning and scheduling abilities to maintain control of own and others' workflow. Strategic planning and implementation of longโ€range plans and programs. Ability to work independently with no close supervision and exercise independent judgment. Supervision Provided By Provides daily and/or project direction to appropriate staff identified. Physical Demands The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion. Must have good balance and coordination. The position requires light work up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently. The Associate must have close visual acuity to perform analysis, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, or extensive reading.
