What is a remote legal assistant?

Remote legal assistants are professionals who provide administrative and legal support to attorneys and law firms while working from a remote location, such as their home or a co-working space. Their responsibilities may include drafting legal documents, managing schedules, conducting legal research, and communicating with clients. By working remotely, legal assistants can offer flexibility and often use digital tools to collaborate efficiently with legal teams. This role is increasingly popular due to advancements in technology and the growing acceptance of remote work in the legal industry.

What does a remote legal assistant do?

As a remote legal assistant, your job is to work from home to assist lawyers with their casework. In this role, you may help research previous cases, draft legal documents, help manage scheduling calendars, send letters and notices, and make travel reservations. Remote legal assistants usually specialize in a specific aspect of work, such as claims or nursing records. This position frequently involves paralegal work, but some remote legal assistants focus exclusively on administrative and clerical tasks. This position may be full-time or part-time, with some possibility of overtime for particularly heavy workloads or complex cases.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote legal assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Legal Assistant, you need strong legal research abilities, document preparation skills, attention to detail, and typically a certificate or associate degree in paralegal studies. Familiarity with legal management software, e-filing systems, and Microsoft Office Suite is essential for managing case files and communication remotely. Excellent time management, written communication, and discretion help you stand out in supporting attorneys and clients from a distance. These skills ensure efficient, accurate legal support and maintain professionalism in a virtual legal environment.

How does a remote legal assistant typically collaborate with attorneys and other team members in a virtual environment?

Remote Legal Assistants often rely on digital tools such as secure email, video conferencing, and document management platforms to collaborate with attorneys and other staff. They may attend virtual meetings, share case files via cloud-based systems, and coordinate schedules using online calendars. Effective communication and strong organizational skills are essential to ensure deadlines are met and information is accurately relayed, as team interactions are primarily virtual. Building rapport with colleagues and maintaining confidentiality are also key challenges in a remote setting.

Can you work from home as a remote legal assistant?

Remote legal assistants can often work from home, as the role primarily involves tasks like document management, research, and communication that can be performed remotely with the right technology. However, some employers may require in-office presence for certain activities or meetings, and familiarity with legal software and confidentiality protocols is essential.

We put powerful aerial imagery, AI-driven analytics, and geospatial tools into the hands of the people who plan, build, insure, and govern the places we all live and work. Our technology turns property uncertainty into decisive action, and our culture brings out the best in the people who build it.
We move fast, we care about craft, and we're proud of what we're building. If you're energized by turning hard problems into real-world impact, we'd love to meet you.

Job Description

About the Role

Location: Fully remote within the continental United States.

Join Nearmap's GTM Finance team as the Analyst who helps keep commission plans accurate, forecasts sharp, and cross-functional partners aligned. You'll sit at the center of Nearmap's global go-to-market business — building operational budgets, running forecasts, and giving GTM leaders the financial read they need to make real decisions. This isn't a back-office reporting seat. You'll support planning discussions, and your numbers will shape what GTM departments actually do next.

Commission work is a core part of the role. You'll help drive commission plan design, own the calculations, and make sure the audit trail holds up — which means working closely with GTM, Sales Operations, Global FP&A, Accounting, Payroll, Legal, and HR. Six different teams, one number that has to be right every time. That's the job.

We're looking for someone with 2-4 years of experience as a Financial Analyst who already knows their way around KPI reporting, forecasting, and financial modeling — someone who builds relationships with stakeholders because they want the full picture, not because it's a line on a performance review. If you're a self-starter who'd rather flag a problem in commission calculations before it becomes an audit finding, this role is built for you.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Planning and Analysis

  • Budgeting and forecasting for the Global GTM business, including preparation and presentation of results
  • Create, implement, and maintain a robust expense forecasting process to allow real-time visibility of GTM spending
  • Support the Commercial Finance Manager and the Director of GTM Finance in the strategic decision-making process
  • Ensure costs incurred by the business are in line with budget expectations, escalating material variances to the Commercial Finance Manager in a timely manner
  • Prepare monthly variance analysis reports for key stakeholders
  • Assist in forecasting and budgeting sales commissions, ensuring they align with overall business objectives and growth targets
  • Support the Accounting team in timely and accurate preparation of monthly GTM spend accruals and reconciliations for commissions accounting
  • Monitor and provide management reporting and analysis on the competitive landscape
  • Ad Hoc projects and requests, as needed

Commission Management

  • Manage the commission accrual and payment process for quota carrying resources across Nearmap
  • Prepare and maintain commission reports and analysis, ensuring they align with company goals and compensation plans
  • Report and analyze quota attainment metrics
  • Identify and track key operational metrics to measure leading indicators of performance
  • In partnership with the Global HR Team, support the end-to-end Sales Incentive Plan (SIP) letter process, including drafting, distributing and maintaining accurate records to ensure all quota-carrying resources receive timely and compliant compensation agreements
  • Continuous improvement and optimization of GTM operational processes

Compliance

  • Keep up to date and comply with all local legislative requirements.
  • Adhere to company guidelines and the corporate Code of Conduct
  • Act in an ethical way when dealing with company assets and other people.
Qualifications

Experience

  • 2-4 years of experience in FP&A or Commercial Finance. SaaS or subscription business experience preferred
  • BS/BA in accounting, finance, economics, or other quantitative fields preferred
  • Experience as a commissions administrator preferred, but not compulsory

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal relationship skills
  • Effective communication across the organization and multiple geographic regions
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Advanced PowerPoint and presentation skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, highly dynamic environment
  • Organized and meets all deadlines
  • Experience with EPM (e.g. Adaptive, Anaplan) and ERP (e.g. NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics) systems
  • Experience with Enterprise CRM (e.g. Salesforce, Hubspot)
  • Experience with BI/reporting tools (e.g. Looker, Tableau, Power BI)

Personal Attributes

  • Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills
  • Positive attitude and energetic
  • Strong emotional intelligence
  • A drive to continually improve processes

Education

  • Degree in the field of commerce, finance, or accounting
