VECRA, Inc. is seeking qualified American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters to support our contract with the Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD). Candidates should demonstrate strong proficiency in ASL-English interpretation, including contact sign/Pidgin Signed English (PSE), oral transliteration, and Video Remote Interpreting (VRI). Interpreters must be able to effectively adapt to a variety of educational settings, including classroom instruction, IEP meetings, staff trainings, and school-related activities.

Job Description
VECRA is seeking professional ASL Interpreters to provide high-quality interpreting services for students, staff, and community members at the Maryland School for the Deaf (Frederick and Columbia campuses) and surrounding DMV-area assignments.
Assignments may include classroom instruction, Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, staff trainings, and school-sponsored events.
ROLES and RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide accurate and culturally competent ASL interpretation in educational settings
  • Support a variety of assignments, including:
    • Classroom instruction
    • IEP meetings and administrative sessions
    • Staff trainings and large group settings
    • School events and extracurricular activities
  • Arrive on-site at least 30 minutes prior to scheduled assignments
  • Maintain professionalism and adhere to the RID Code of Professional Conduct
  • Collaborate with other interpreters in team interpreting environments when required
  • Accept or decline assignments within required response timelines
  • Maintain communication with VECRA scheduling and program management staff

QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIRED SKILLS:
Interpreter Levels (Tiered Assignments)
Candidates may be placed based on experience
  • Tier 1:
    • Certified interpreters (RID/NAD)
    • 3+ years experience
    • IEP meetings, leadership, and high-level assignments
  • Tier 2:
    • Group settings (trainings, assemblies)
  • Tier 3:
    • General school activities and events.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and communication best practices
  • Ability to work in educational environments
  • Strong professionalism, reliability, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • RID or NAD certification
  • Experience interpreting in K-12 or educational settings
  • Experience with IEP meetings or specialized assignments
  • Willingness to travel within a 50-mile radius
  • Availability for recurring or long-term assignments
Work Environment
