Job Description:

Position Purpose

The Laboratory Safety Specialist for the Department of Environmental Health & Safety provides support to faculty, students, and staff to help facilitate, assess, and promote a safe and healthy working environment in research laboratories and research support spaces. The major responsibilities for this position will be to support the laboratory safety program by providing training, conducting inspections, assessing ventilation equipment, and providing risk assessments of lab related work. This position will help with other safety and compliance related projects as needed.


In addition, this position is part of the Emergency Response Team required to respond to emergencies as a rotating member of the emergency on-call team before, during, and after business hours including weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule.

Job Qualifications

  • B.S. in Biology or related science or A.S. in Biology

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience working in a research laboratory, safety department, or doing environmental compliance or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must be able to obtain IATA and DOT hazardous materials shipping certifications.

Job Competencies

  • Capable of obtaining medical clearances for using respiratory protection necessary for HAZMAT response.

  • Good interpersonal skills.

  • Good presentation and public speaking skills.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds to shoulder height.
