Remote Kill Switch Engineer information

What is a remote kill switch engineer?

Remote Kill Switch Engineers are specialized professionals responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining systems that can remotely disable or control devices, vehicles, or software applications. Their work is crucial for industries like automotive, cybersecurity, and IoT, where remote shutdown capabilities can enhance security and prevent unauthorized use. These engineers ensure that kill switch mechanisms are reliable, secure, and comply with regulatory standards, often working closely with software developers, hardware engineers, and security teams. They may also be involved in troubleshooting, risk assessment, and responding to emergency situations where remote deactivation is necessary.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote kill switch engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Kill Switch Engineer, you need a solid background in cybersecurity, network protocols, and embedded systems, often supported by a degree in computer science or electrical engineering. Familiarity with security frameworks, hardware control interfaces, and incident response tools—as well as certifications like CISSP or CEH—is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and managing high-stress situations. These competencies ensure secure, reliable control over remote systems and rapid response to potential threats, protecting organizational assets and safety.

What are the most common challenges faced by remote kill switch engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Kill Switch Engineers often deal with the critical responsibility of designing and implementing fail-safe mechanisms for remote device shutdown. A common challenge is ensuring the security and reliability of these systems to prevent unauthorized access or accidental activations. Engineers must collaborate closely with cybersecurity teams and regularly test their solutions against emerging threats. Staying updated with compliance standards and best practices is essential for minimizing risks and ensuring system resilience.

What is the difference between Remote Kill Switch Engineer vs Remote Security Engineer?

Job Title: Specialist, Integration & Test Engineer
Job Code: 40563
Job Location: Washington DC
Job Schedule: 9/80: Employees work 9 out of every 14 days – totaling 80 hours worked, and have every other Friday off

Job Description:

We are seeking a mid-to-senior Platform Engineer to build and operate the web-based services, infrastructure, and data-collection pipelines that support our research and development teams. This is a broad, hands-on role spanning cloud and on-premises infrastructure, networking, automation, and developer enablement. The role offers significant scope for a creative, pragmatic and responsible technologist to forge their own path.

The working environment features an uncommon dual hybrid cloud and disconnected on-prem nature. It requires a versatile engineer who is comfortable moving between the environments. You will need to be comfortable designing, developing, deploying and operating custom tools to support the organization’s research and development teams.

The position can be based in either our Ottawa or Washington, D.C. office, with remote or hybrid arrangements considered. Occasional travel to other company sites around the globe, as well as the two North American offices, may be required. Since your closest peers will not be in the same time zone as you, you will be expected to be intrinsically motivated to work effectively, efficiently and collaboratively with remote peers and global customers.

Essential Functions

  • Build, operate, and maintain web services and the supporting infrastructure.
  • Use Git and GitLab CI/CD to develop, test, and deploy tools and services.
  • Manage TLS certificates, reverse proxies, and related infrastructure for reliable service delivery.
  • Create and maintain data-collection pipelines, automation, and orchestration workflows using tools like NiFi, Airflow, n8n, and Playwright.
  • Support development teams across connected and disconnected environments, including use of cloud services where needed.
  • Develop CI/CD pipelines, iOS signing/sideloading automation, and test infrastructure with containers and Infrastructure-as-Code.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and improve infrastructure, observability, and network reliability to support developer productivity.
  • Must be authorized to work in Canada or the U.S. without visa sponsorship and be willing to collaborate across global time zones.
  • Eligibility to obtain security clearance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.

Preferred Additional Skills

  • 8 years of experience in platform, infrastructure, or DevOps engineering, including disconnected/offline environments.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and JavaScript, plus hands-on Git and GitLab pipeline experience.
  • Experience managing TLS certificates, reverse proxies, automation/orchestration tools, and headless browser automation.
  • Practical experience with AWS S3, Linux administration, VMware vSphere, virtual machines, and Infrastructure as Code.
  • Solid networking knowledge, including Layer 2 concepts like VLANs, switch configuration, and network troubleshooting tools.
  • Comfortable working with Docker and Docker Compose.
  • Broader AWS experience, such as EC2, Lambda, and Route 53.
  • Experience supporting developers in disconnected environments.
  • Familiarity with storage and object storage platforms like TrueNAS Scale and MinIO.
  • Understanding of Layer 3 networking operations.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Ansible, Terraform, and other IaC tools.
  • Familiarity with iOS build, code-signing, provisioning, and side-loading workflows.

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in Greater D.C area is $88,500 - $164,500. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location. L3Harris also offers a variety of benefits, including health and disability insurance, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, EAP, education assistance, parental leave, paid time off, and company-paid holidays. The specific programs and options available to an employee may vary depending on date of hire, schedule type, and the applicability of collective bargaining agreements.
