Job description
- Lead advanced testing, commissioning, and maintenance on LV–HV equipment (480V–600kV)
- Perform diagnostics using Doble, TTR, Power Factor, Tan Delta, VLF, DC Hi-Pot, and resistance test equipment
- Test and verify electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor-based protective relays
- Develop test plans and execute commissioning procedures for new or upgraded systems
- Supervise field crews, assign tasks, and ensure safety, quality, and compliance
- Complete reports, test results, and job documentation using Power DB and other platforms
- Interface directly with customers to provide updates, gather requirements, and ensure satisfaction
- Enforce safety practices, LOTO protocols, and PPE usage on job sites
- Maintain tools, test equipment, and company vehicles in safe working conditions
- Mentor and train junior field technicians
- Troubleshoot and resolve field issues independently and on-site
- Support emergency response and planned shutdown/start-up projects
- Follow strict safety and PPE usage protocols due to noise, electrical hazards, and elevated work areas
- 7–10+ years of hands-on experience in the power industry, including P amp;C systems and field commissioning
- Strong knowledge of substation equipment, MV/HV breakers, and electrical system troubleshooting
- Proficient with Power DB, Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams
- Familiar with OSHA, NETA standards, and electrical safety procedures
- Prior experience leading crews and mentoring field technicians
- Ability to develop and execute test plans for complex upgrades and installations
- Comfortable managing shifting priorities and working with minimal supervision
- Willingness to travel 75% across the continental U.S.
- High school diploma or GED required
- Valid driver’s license
- Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug/alcohol screening
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
- Available for extended and irregular hours as needed
- Able to work outdoors in all weather, at heights (100+ ft), in confined spaces, and near high-voltage equipment and heavy machinery
- Physically capable of lifting 50+ lbs. and sustaining extended physical activity
- Requires good vision, hearing, and English proficiency for safe, effective communication in noisy environments
- Completion of a trade school program, technical college, associate degree, or skilled trade certification
- Prior experience working in power plants, utilities, or heavy industrial environments
- Familiarity with relay settings development or advanced system protection analysis
- NETA Level III certification preferred: journeyman or equivalent accepted
- Additional safety certifications or OSHA 30
- A TWIC card
