Job description

About the role and team

Uber is building the next generation of its logistics platform: the systems that move physical packages across a regional carrier network, from the first pickup to the final doorstep. This spans middle-mile linehaul between hubs, sortation and cross-dock operations inside those hubs, and the last-mile delivery that puts a package in a customer's hands.

Uber Direct is among the fastest-growing products in the B2C (Business-to-Consumer) delivery spaces. It lets merchants create deliveries through our Dashboard or by integrating directly with our public API, adding delivery to their own website or app. We are now extending these capabilities into a full package-logistics network.

This is a rare opportunity to build a foundational platform close to the ground floor. You'll design and own the core systems that track the custody of every package as it changes hands across the network - services meant to run Uber's logistics operations for the next decade, built on Uber's world-class infrastructure and handling millions of physical events a day.

What you'll do

  • Design and build the core services that track and orchestrate the movement of packages across the network - from pickup, through hub sortation and linehaul, to final delivery
  • Build highly scalable, high-quality product features used every day by merchants, drivers, warehouse operators, and end customers
  • Model the domain from first principles and design event-driven systems and data models that will underpin logistics for years to come
  • Write elegant, maintainable, scalable, and well-documented code on Uber's platform primitives (Go, distributed datastores, workflow orchestration, streaming/event buses, RPC)
  • Drive data-driven architecture and systems design decisions
  • Build reliable alerting and monitoring for the systems you own, and take real ownership of their operations, reliability, and on-call health
  • Collaborate cross-functionally (Product, Design, Data, Operations) and across teams to solve hard problems and ship end-to-end
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to more junior engineers on the team

Basic Qualifications

  • 2+ years of backend software engineering experience
  • Proficiency in Golang, Java, or a similar Object Oriented Programming language
  • Experience designing and operating distributed systems at scale
  • A track record of shipping high-quality products used by real customers
  • Willingness to own your products end-to-end - operations, maintenance, and reliability included
  • Experience working collaboratively across functions and leading cross-team efforts
  • Experience mentoring and guiding junior engineers

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS or MS in Computer Science or a related technical field
  • Experience with event-driven and/or streaming architectures and micro-service design
  • Experience in logistics, supply chain, fulfillment, marketplaces, or other high-throughput, real-world operational systems
  • Comfort working in greenfield environments and migrating or integrating existing systems onto a new platform
  • Experience with cross-team initiatives and driving alignment across stakeholders
  • Self-driven to identify opportunities to make things better, faster, and more efficient
  • Ability to translate a high-level, ambiguous business problem into a concrete technical solution
