Job description

Title: Full Stack Java Engineer

Location: Remote (United States)

Type: Perm

Compensation: $120,000 – $140,000 Annually

Position Overview

Phoenix Staff is seeking two experienced Full Stack Software Engineers to join our client as the founding members of its internal engineering team. Our client is consolidating several legacy federal regulatory reporting applications into a unified, cloud-based, multi-tenant SaaS platform.

This is a greenfield development opportunity focused on building a new platform based on the business requirements and product knowledge gained from the existing applications. It is not a feature-for-feature legacy rewrite.

The ideal candidate has strong hands-on experience across the full Java technology stack and is comfortable contributing to frontend development, backend services, databases, testing, cloud deployment, and evolving architecture. These engineers will work closely with technical leadership, product teams, and business stakeholders while helping establish the engineering practices and technical foundation for a growing internal team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop a new multi-tenant SaaS platform using Java, Spring Boot, TypeScript, and modern frontend technologies.
  • Build backend services and RESTful API endpoints using Spring Boot and related frameworks.
  • Develop responsive user interfaces, with Angular as the preferred frontend framework.
  • Work with PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and ORM technologies such as Hibernate and Spring Data JPA to support application data needs.
  • Contribute to architectural discussions and technical design decisions in partnership with technical leadership.
  • Translate product requirements and legacy application functionality into new user stories and scalable solutions.
  • Write unit and integration tests as part of a test-driven development process.
  • Build and deploy containerized applications within a cloud environment.
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and development-focused DevOps responsibilities.
  • Support ETL, data validation, and data transformation processes related to regulatory reporting.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering efficiency and reduce repetitive development work.
  • Investigate application issues and provide occasional second- or third-level support.
  • Collaborate with product, business, and technical stakeholders throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Help establish engineering standards and best practices as the internal development team grows.

Required Qualifications

  • Five to eight years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Java, Spring Boot, and modern backend development frameworks.
  • Proven full-stack development experience across frontend interfaces, backend services, APIs, and data layers.
  • Experience with TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS, and a modern frontend framework.
  • Experience with Angular is preferred, but backgrounds in React, Vue, Next.js, or Nuxt will be considered.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, or another relational database.
  • Familiarity with Hibernate, Spring Data JPA, or a comparable object-relational mapping framework.
  • Experience deploying applications to AWS, Azure, GCP, or another major cloud platform.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and containerization technologies such as Docker or Kubernetes.
  • Understanding of infrastructure as code and development-focused DevOps practices.
  • Experience writing coded unit and integration tests within a test-driven development environment.
  • Strong understanding of SaaS architecture, scalable application design, and cloud-native development.
  • Ability to work across the full stack rather than operating exclusively as a frontend or backend engineer.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Comfort working in a greenfield environment with evolving requirements and a small internal team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing and deploying applications within AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud environments.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes and containerized cloud workloads.
  • Experience with modern Java versions (Java 17+), Spring Boot 3.x, and microservices architecture.
  • Strong Angular development experience.
  • Experience with Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, or similar automated testing frameworks.
  • Experience building multi-tenant SaaS applications.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL and Hibernate/Spring Data JPA.
  • Familiarity with ETL, data validation, and data transformation pipelines.
  • Experience migrating customers or data from legacy products to a new platform.
  • Knowledge of XML, XBRL, or regulatory reporting formats.
  • Experience with FERC, SEC, OSHA, MSHA, EHS, ESG, GRC, enterprise risk, or another regulated reporting environment.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot, or similar platforms.
  • AWS, Azure, GCP, or other relevant cloud certifications.
  • Phoenix-area location for occasional team collaboration, although this is not required.

What Success Looks Like

  • Learning the existing products, business requirements, and federal regulatory reporting needs during the first 90 days.
  • Contributing thoughtful input to platform architecture and technical design decisions.
  • Beginning to deliver high-quality code against new product requirements and user stories.
  • Working effectively across the frontend, backend, database, testing, and cloud layers.
  • Establishing reliable testing, deployment, and development practices for the new platform.
  • Using AI-assisted development tools responsibly to improve productivity and software quality.
  • Collaborating successfully with technical leadership, product teams, and business stakeholders.
  • Demonstrating ownership, flexibility, and comfort working in a greenfield environment.
  • Helping create a scalable technical foundation as our client expands its internal engineering team.
