Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Backend Engineer based in Netherlands.

This role sits at the core of a high-scale, real-time digital platform serving millions of active users daily. You will be responsible for designing and building robust backend systems that power critical product features and ensure seamless performance under heavy traffic. Working within a modern microservices architecture, you will contribute to the evolution of a system built from scratch with a strong focus on scalability, reliability, and maintainability. The environment is highly engineering-driven, with a strong emphasis on containerized deployments, cloud-native infrastructure, and distributed systems. You will collaborate closely with product, engineering, and operations teams to deliver new features while ensuring system stability 24/7. This is a high-impact role for a backend engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges at scale.

Accountabilities:
  • Develop and maintain highly scalable backend microservices supporting millions of daily users
  • Design and implement robust system logic for complex, high-traffic, and highly transactional applications
  • Collaborate with product managers and engineering teams to translate requirements into scalable technical solutions
  • Participate in code reviews to ensure adherence to architectural standards, best practices, and high code quality
  • Support production systems by diagnosing and resolving incidents to ensure high availability and stability
  • Contribute to team ceremonies including sprint planning, grooming, demos, and retrospectives
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of engineering practices and standards
  • Work on performance optimization, system reliability, and scalability across distributed environments
Requirements:
  • 3+ years of experience in backend or software engineering roles
  • Strong experience building scalable backend systems in distributed environments
  • Solid knowledge of microservices architecture and RESTful API design
  • Hands-on experience with Java (preferably Java 17) and frameworks such as Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, and Spring Data
  • Strong understanding of databases such as MySQL and MongoDB, and experience with SQL optimization
  • Experience with caching and messaging systems such as Redis and RabbitMQ
  • Familiarity with containerized environments using Docker and Kubernetes, and cloud platforms such as AWS
  • Strong knowledge of object-oriented design, system design, and software engineering best practices
  • Experience with high-availability systems, performance tuning, and non-functional requirements such as reliability and maintainability
  • Excellent communication skills in English and ability to work independently in a remote-friendly environment
