A Remote IT Project Manager is a professional who oversees and coordinates information technology projects for an organization while working from a remote location, rather than in a traditional office setting. Their duties include planning project timelines, managing resources, communicating with stakeholders, and ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget. They use various digital collaboration tools to lead distributed teams, monitor progress, and address challenges that arise during the project lifecycle. Effective communication, organization, and technical knowledge are key skills for this role.

What does a remote IT project manager do?

As a remote IT project manager, you work from home to organize and oversee the process and plan for a software or hardware deployment project. In this virtual role, you provide daily management and oversight of the project, present reports and updates to senior executives, and participate in daily meetings to understand user requirements and adjust the project as necessary. You frequently use email, live chat, and virtual office software to stay in contact with team members. Depending on the needs of the project, your duties may include reviewing submitted work, collecting answers to questions asked by team members, and providing oversight of vendor partners.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote IT project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote IT Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, technical understanding of IT systems, and a relevant degree or certification such as PMP or Agile/Scrum credentials. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Trello, Microsoft Project, and remote collaboration platforms is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and self-motivation are critical soft skills for managing distributed teams and stakeholders. These competencies ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and facilitate effective collaboration in a remote environment.

How does a remote IT project manager effectively coordinate with distributed teams across different time zones?

A Remote IT Project Manager typically relies on a combination of digital collaboration tools, clear communication protocols, and flexible scheduling to coordinate with team members in various locations. Regular virtual meetings, shared project management platforms, and transparent status updates help ensure everyone stays aligned despite time zone differences. It's common to establish overlapping work hours for critical discussions and to document decisions thoroughly, so all stakeholders remain informed. Effective remote managers also foster a culture of trust and accountability, which is essential in a distributed team environment.

Job description

About Us
Vancord is a Managed Security Services company specializing in managed services and full-stack information technology and cyber-security services. We help organizations stay secure through proactive services backed by a fully integrated team spanning managed IT, offensive security, defensive security (SOC/MDR), and compliance.

The Role
We're looking for a Senior IT & Cybersecurity Project Manager to lead complex, technically demanding projects and help mature our project management practice. You'll manage the full project lifecycle — from initiation through delivery — coordinating across internal teams, clients, and vendors to roll out new cybersecurity technologies and resolve security concerns. This is a great fit for someone who thrives on bringing structure to fast-moving environments and wants real ownership over how a growing PM function is built.

What You'll Do

  • Own multiple concurrent projects end-to-end, managing scope, timelines, resources, and risk
  • Build project plans and milestones in partnership with internal teams and clients
  • Track project health, clear blockers, and get ahead of risks before they escalate
  • Communicate status clearly to stakeholders — from engineers to executives
  • Identify root causes of delivery issues and drive process improvements
  • Help build the standards, templates, and governance that scale our PM practice
  • Mentor junior team members as the practice grows
  • Deliver excellent customer service and be a trusted point of contact for clients

What You Bring

  • 5+ years of experience in IT or cybersecurity project management
  • Experience with security-focused projects (incident response, remediation, tooling rollouts, compliance) strongly preferred
  • A track record of delivering complex projects on time and on budget
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence without direct authority
  • Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences
  • Sharp analytical and problem-solving instincts
  • PMP certification (or equivalent) required or strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with frameworks like NIST or CIS Benchmarks is a plus

Why Vancord
Join a tight-knit, mission-driven team solving real security problems for clients who need it most — with the autonomy to shape how project delivery works as we grow.

Company Description

Vancord was founded on the guiding principles that information security is born of sound fundamentals, mature operational practices, and is a shared organizational responsibility. It is our core belief that listening closely to our clients and working collaboratively will yield the best possible results. By deeply understanding our clients' needs, we will ensure the delivery of solutions that are uniquely beneficial to their business and constituents. By adhering to our core guiding principles, we are confident that we will distinguish ourselves from other information security professional services companies.
