What are remote island jobs?

Remote island jobs refer to employment opportunities located on islands that are geographically isolated from major urban centers. These positions can range from hospitality and tourism roles, such as resort staff and tour guides, to essential services like healthcare, maintenance, and environmental conservation. Working on a remote island often requires adaptability due to limited resources, unique living conditions, and a close-knit community environment. People interested in these jobs are usually drawn by the appeal of natural beauty, adventure, and a slower-paced lifestyle. However, it's important to consider the challenges, such as isolation and limited access to amenities, before accepting a remote island position.

What are some unique challenges professionals might face when working in a remote island setting, and how can they prepare for them?

Professionals working on remote islands often encounter challenges such as limited access to resources, slower internet connectivity, and potential isolation from larger teams or industry networks. To prepare, it's important to develop strong problem-solving skills, be adaptable, and proactively communicate with colleagues and support networks off-island. Staying organized and resourceful can help overcome logistical hurdles, and building relationships with local team members can foster collaboration despite geographic separation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote island manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Island Manager, you need strong operational management skills, knowledge of hospitality or facility maintenance, and experience in logistics, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications. Familiarity with property management systems, satellite communications, and emergency protocols is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and interpersonal communication are vital soft skills due to the unique challenges and isolation of the environment. These abilities ensure smooth operations, guest satisfaction, and effective crisis response in a remote setting.

Job description

Smart.Vet is Now VetWise!
As of August 1, 2025, Smart.Vet became VetWise. While our name has changed, our mission, ownership and team remain the same. We're still the trusted company you know, just with a fresh new look and name that better reflects who we are and where we're headed.
About Us:
VetWise is a provider of virtual care services in the veterinary industry, offering innovative solutions to problems facing veterinary professionals.
We are dedicated to collaborating with animal hospitals by enhancing their in-person services, extending care availability and easing the workload on brick-and-mortar practices. Our goal is to support overburdened hospitals by providing patient care when it's needed most, whether during regular hours or after. We're not here to compete-we're here to collaborate. While we've grown, we maintain a "mom and pop" culture and mentality, valuing personal relationships and fostering a close-knit, supportive work environment.
The Opportunity:
VetWise is expanding and seeking passionate Remote Veterinarians licensed in the state of Florida to join our growing network! As part of our network, you maintain control over your schedule. You may claim consultations based on your availability and professional preference. This role allows you to practice veterinary medicine in a flexible capacity while enhancing access to care for pet owners and alleviating the workload for hospitals.
Your Role:
  • Provide virtual consultations for pet owners in Florida and additional states/provinces where you hold licensure in accordance with applicable telemedicine regulations
  • Collaborate with hospitals to support their patient needs
  • Opportunity to provide care for exotics if desired

Our Requirements:
  • Successful completion of the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE)
  • Unrestricted license to practice veterinary medicine in Florida
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience as a practicing veterinarian
  • Strong client communication skills, sound clinical judgment, and critical thinking abilities
  • Experience working with exotic species is considered an asset
  • Preference will be given to candidates licensed in multiple provinces/states, including: Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Florida, New York
  • A passion for improving access to veterinary care

Why Join Us?
  • Be part of a growing, innovative company that values a people first approach to teamwork and relationships
  • Enjoy schedule flexibility
  • Work remotely from the comfort of your home
  • Potential opportunity to transition into a scheduled-shift role in the future for selected candidates

Schedule
  • This is a casual/on-demand role
  • Consultations are available based on client volume and our services are offered 24/7, 365 days of the year

Location
  • Remote - Licensed in the state of Florida

Compensation
  • Compensation is commission-based and varies depending on the species and consult type.

If you are passionate about expanding access to veterinary care while helping your colleagues achieve a healthier work-life balance, we invite you to apply.
Please submit your resume and complete the preliminary application questions.
