Remote Ip Core Network Engineer information

What is a remote IP core network engineer?

A Remote IP Core Network Engineer is a networking professional who designs, implements, manages, and troubleshoots the core network infrastructure of an organization, focusing on IP-based networking technologies. Working remotely, these engineers ensure seamless data transmission, high availability, and security within the core network, which is the backbone for all network services. Their responsibilities often include configuring routers and switches, monitoring network performance, optimizing traffic flows, and supporting the integration of new network solutions. They play a critical role in supporting enterprise connectivity, scalability, and network reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote IP core network engineer?

To thrive as a Remote IP Core Network Engineer, you need deep knowledge of IP networking, routing protocols (such as BGP and OSPF), and a relevant degree or certifications like CCNP or CCIE. Familiarity with network management tools, configuration systems, and monitoring platforms is crucial for maintaining and troubleshooting core networks. Excellent analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help you address complex network issues and collaborate effectively with remote teams. These skills are vital to ensure seamless network performance, high availability, and effective incident response in distributed environments.

What are the typical collaboration methods used by remote IP core network engineers when working with geographically dispersed teams?

Remote IP Core Network Engineers often collaborate with team members across different regions using a combination of real-time communication tools, such as video conferencing, instant messaging, and project management platforms. They participate in regular virtual meetings, document changes in shared repositories, and use ticketing systems to track issues and progress. Clear documentation and timely updates are crucial for ensuring network reliability and effective handovers. This remote structure enables engineers to contribute to global network initiatives while maintaining alignment with the broader technical team.

What is the difference between Remote Ip Core Network Engineer vs Remote Network Operations Center (NOC) Technician?

AspectRemote Ip Core Network EngineerRemote Network Operations Center (NOC) Technician
CredentialsNetworking certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP)Networking certifications (e.g., CompTIA Network+)
Work EnvironmentDesign, optimize, and troubleshoot core IP networksMonitor and maintain network infrastructure, respond to alerts
Industry UsageTelecommunications, ISPs, large enterprise networksService providers, enterprise network support

The Remote Ip Core Network Engineer focuses on designing and maintaining core IP network infrastructure, requiring advanced networking skills and certifications. In contrast, the Remote NOC Technician primarily monitors network health, troubleshoots issues, and ensures uptime. Both roles are essential in network operations but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Job description

Nexus Engineering Group is employee-owned, full-service, and built by the people who do the work. As a SCADA Engineer, you'll help design, analyze, and deliver electrical substation projects for utility and power delivery clients - with exposure across the full breadth of substation engineering.
ย
As a SCADA Engineer, you will develop and support supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, RTU integration, substation automation, and communication networks that help clients monitor and operate critical electrical infrastructure safely and reliably. You will work alongside protection & controls engineers, designers, project managers, and clients to deliver integrated automation solutions across transmission, distribution, and industrial facilities.
Why Nexus

You'll own a piece of what you build. Nexus is employee-owned through our ESOP, so the value you help create comes back to you - not just outside shareholders. We invest in early-career engineers and give them real work from the start.

What you can expect:

  • Employee ownership (ESOP) - build equity in the firm as it grows
  • Broad exposure across substation disciplines - physical design, P&C, studies, and field work - to help you find your path
  • Mentorship from senior engineers who review your work and help you grow
  • Full-service EPCm exposure, from concept through startup, across a diverse client base
  • Career paths that grow with you - toward technical leadership, project management, or discipline leadership
  • Flexible work arrangements where business needs allow
What You'll Do
  • Design, configure, and support SCADA, RTU, HMI, and automation systems for utility and substation projects.
  • Develop SCADA architecture, communication diagrams, I/O lists, point databases, and system integration documentation.
  • Develop and review wiring diagrams, control schematics, communication drawings, and network layouts.
  • Coordinate with Protection & Controls engineers to integrate relay data, alarms, status points, and control functions into SCADA systems.
  • Support communication protocols such as DNP3, Modbus, IEC-61850, and Ethernet-based industrial networks.
  • Perform system testing, factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and commissioning support.
  • Interface directly with clients, vendors, and project teams to define system requirements and resolve technical issues.
  • Assist with equipment specifications, procurement packages, technical evaluations, and construction support activities.
  • Participate in site visits, startup activities, troubleshooting efforts, and field investigations as required.
  • Ensure all deliverables meet client requirements, industry standards, and Nexus quality expectations.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
ย
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field.
  • 3+ years of SCADA, automation, controls, power delivery, utility, or industrial systems experience.
  • Experience with RTU configuration, control systems integration, or substation automation projects.
  • Experience interpreting electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and communication drawings.
  • Knowledge of SCADA and communication protocols including DNP3, Modbus, IEC-61850, or similar.
  • Familiarity with substation automation systems, relays, RTUs, HMIs, and communication networks.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, or equivalent design software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure.
  • Experience with SEL RTACs, SEL relays, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories equipment, GE, ABB, Siemens, or similar utility automation platforms.
  • Experience supporting transmission or distribution utility clients.
  • Experience with networking, cybersecurity, and industrial communication systems.
  • Commissioning or startup experience.
Work Environment & Physical Demands

Work is performed in a hybrid environment that includes office, remote, and active project-site settings. This role may require:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer workstation, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Periodic travel to substations, construction sites, client facilities, and project locations
  • Site visits that may involve exposure to outdoor weather, energized electrical equipment, noise, heavy equipment, and active construction environments; appropriate PPE must be worn
  • The ability to walk uneven terrain, navigate outdoor substation yards, climb stairs, and access project-site areas, with or without reasonable accommodation
$85,000 - $120,000 a year

The posted salary range represents the anticipated base pay for this position in accordance with applicable pay-transparency requirements and may vary based on experience, qualifications, skills, certifications, work location, and market conditions.

In addition to base pay, eligible employees may receive:

  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) - an ownership stake and a share in the long-term success of Nexus
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus life and disability insurance
  • 401(k) with company match and discretionary bonus opportunities
  • Paid time off, holidays, and paid parental leave
  • Professional development and career advancement - training, certifications, licensure support, tuition assistance, and mentorship
  • Wellness benefits and a flexible schedule where business needs allow
