Job description

The Operations Supervisor is the senior on-site operational leader responsible for the daily execution of Heavy Haul operations. This position ensures the safe, efficient, and compliant movement of freight while leading drivers and supporting operational excellence. The Operations Supervisor oversees dispatch coordination, driver performance, fleet readiness, maintenance scheduling, customer communication, and yard operations. Working closely with the Senior Manager, this role maximizes equipment utilization, maintains regulatory compliance, and delivers exceptional customer service.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Supervise and lead Class A CDL drivers and yard personnel while fostering a positive, accountable, and safety-focused culture
  • Coordinate daily dispatch activities, driver assignments, routing, and load scheduling to ensure on-time service
  • Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, Hours of Service (HOS), ELD requirements, and company safety policies
  • Monitor driver performance using safety metrics, service levels, and operational KPIs while providing coaching and corrective action
  • Oversee fleet management by coordinating preventative maintenance, repairs, inspections, licensing, registrations, and equipment readiness
  • Partner with maintenance vendors to ensure tractors, trailers, and support equipment remain safe, compliant, and operational
  • Maintain communication with customers regarding shipment status, scheduling, delays, and operational updates
  • Coordinate yard operations including equipment staging, trailer utilization, inventory control, and storage activities
  • Respond to operational issues and implement timely solutions to minimize service disruptions.
  • Assist with incident investigations, accident reporting, root cause analysis, and corrective actions
  • Support onboarding, training, and development of drivers and operational personnel
  • Maintain operational records, inspection reports, maintenance documentation, and compliance records
  • Collaborate with the Senior Manager to improve operational efficiency and department performance

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead daily operational meetings and communicate priorities to drivers and staff
  • Conduct employee coaching, performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, and recommend hiring or termination decisions
  • Monitor KPIs including on-time performance, fleet utilization, safety performance, equipment uptime, and driver productivity
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels to meet operational demands
  • Partner with the Senior Manager to develop operational improvements, SOPs, and long-term initiatives
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for operational issues involving drivers, equipment, customers, and vendors
  • Act as department leader in the absence of the Senior Manager
  • Promote accountability, professionalism, continuous improvement, and safety

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required
  • 3-5 years of transportation, logistics, or heavy haul operations experience
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of DOT regulations, FMCSA compliance, HOS, and ELD systems
  • Experience with fleet management and preventative maintenance programs
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and transportation management software

COMPENSATION
The expected base pay for this role is between $67,000-$85,000. This information reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position based on current national data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Individual pay is based on skills, experience and other relevant factors.
