Job description

Xcel Energy is seeking a motivated college senior to join our Converged Infrastructure team within the Technology Services organization, based in Denver, CO. This paid internship offers hands-on experience in enterprise IT infrastructure, including compute, storage, virtualization, cloud technologies and regulatory compliance. Interns will work alongside experienced engineers, system administrators and architects to support the design, deployment, and optimization of converged systems that power critical business applications across the company. This position will be focused on our regulatory OT environment.

This opportunity is ideal for students passionate about learning and advancing their career while being given exposure to working in infrastructure automation, systems integration, hardware support as well as an understanding of systems that run our regulatory compliance business. Interns will gain exposure to real-world challenges and contribute to projects that enhance scalability, reliability, and performance of our hybrid IT environment.

Typical Intern Responsibilities

  • Assist in monitoring and maintaining converged infrastructure systems (compute, storage, virtualization).

  • Support automation efforts using scripting tools (e.g., PowerShell, Python) to streamline infrastructure operations.

  • Participate in hardware lifecycle management, including provisioning, upgrades, and decommissioning.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure-related issues.

  • Work with NERC CIP Reliability Standards within our OT environment.

  • Document system configurations, processes, and best practices.

  • Contribute to performance analysis and capacity planning initiatives

Internship Details

  • Start Date: September 1, 2026

  • Location: Denver, CO (T3 - Corporate Office)

  • Schedule: Option to work full-time during summer (up to 40 hours/week); potential for part-time extension during spring (up to 20 hours/week)

  • Duration: Potential to extend beyond initial term based on performance and business needs

Minimum Requirements

  • Current student; Junior or higher.

  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field

  • Able to commute to the Denver corporate office

  • Available to work full-time during summer; part-time availability during the school year

Preferred Qualifications

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher

  • Completed coursework in systems programming, networking, or cloud computing

  • Familiarity with virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V)

  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Python)

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Must know the NERC CIP Reliability Standards as they pertain to Xcel Energy

  • Understanding of VMWare Suite of Products: Aria Operations, VCF, Distributed Firewalls (east-west traffic in OT)

  • Knowledge of Operational Metrics for Capacity Management, System Availability and Lifecycle Management

  • Understanding of IT and OT environments

  • Experience gathering, validating, and uploading compliance-related data to enterprise portals to meet CIP regulatory standards and audit requirements.

  • Knowledge of system health monitoring and firmware update processes using Dell OpenManage Enterprise and Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) to maintain optimal server performance and security.

  • Ability to navigate Cisco UCS Manager for server administration tasks, including monitoring system health

  • Familiarity with ServiceNow CMDB, including maintaining and validating asset management records to support accurate configuration tracking and lifecycle management.
